Anyone ever vacation there? What are your thoughts as a family vacation spot?

Hiya - this is kinda my neck of the woods so I'll offer some help.

Couple of quick thoughts:

1. Its very seculded and nature oriented - I don't want to paint it as you being stuck out in the middle of nowhere, but you won't find Pirate Putt-Putt or Oyster Bars called "Sharky's" with all you can shuck specials. Myrtle Beach it is not.

2. It's very peaceful. Lots of fun nature walks, boat rides to see sealife, great fishing and I believe there is a Colonial Fort.

3. Golf is either hit or miss - in a recession, you should get some good prices.

4. Restaurants and shopping options are limited. It's not barren and their are good places to eat. But it's probably a place where you might have to hit a Publix or Kroger and buy some supplies for the place you are staying.

5. Avoid Spring Break and the first weekend in November. It's over run with college students.

6. Kinda hard to get to. 4 Hour drive from Atlanta and 45 minutes from Savannah. 1 hour and 15 minutes to Jacksonville.

Hope this helps? I prefer Hilton Head.
