  • Anybody have one of these or the original Kindle? I just ordered the Kindle 2 this morning. Looks like a really cool gadget and will be nice to be able to carry an entire library of books when on the go instead of finding room for 2-3 books in my suitcase. Plus, books are much cheaper. Most bestsellers amd new releases are $9.99 and other books are even less. You can also subscribe to magazines, newspapers and blogs. Can't wait to get it.

I have one. Just got it a few weeks ago. (Since I'm in publishing I can write it off as a business expense.) I really like it but I wish you could adjust the brightness/contrast of the screen. It's a bit hard to read when you're in bad lighting.

I also hope they figure out the PDF conversion. It's kinda crappy right now. I read a lot of PDFs for work and school, so I hope they improve that.

I love the fact you can read newspapers and magazines on it. I subscribed to Newsweek. And you can load up on free samples! Most of what I have on there is samples right now.

I don't have one, but have heard they are great. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you can download a free Kindle app. It's not as powerful as a real Kindle, but it's compatible with the books. You can't view the newspapers on the app however.

Maybe we ought to move this into Computers & Technology?

Anyway - some interesting news today.

Looks like the folks at Plastic Logic are getting serious about their 8.5 x 11 eReader.

They will be teaming with Barnes & Noble.

Plastic Logic basically brings together the best minds from MIT and University of Cambridge in making their device. Like the Kindle Plastic Logic's reader will use an eInk display. MIT is where the eInk display began while Plastic Logic, which was birthed from Cavendish Labs provides the flexible plastic electronic package needed for their large format reader.

The Plastic Logic reader will also have hooks into the 3G networks of AT&T - and can connect via Wi-Fi, the last giving them something of an advantage over Kindle.

In addition there seems to be better support for widely distributed file types:
    • Support for PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents with no conversion required
    • International support for wireless connectivity through the AT&T network
    • WiFi support, including AT&T’s hotspots throughout the world
    • Larger display (smaller than the Kindle DX) in a 8.5 x 11 size
    • Plastic, durable touch screen display technology
It looks like the Plastic Logic Reader is the electronic ink reader targeted more towards the enterprise customer with all the native file support and plastic display. The different wireless radios also make it a device that can be connected just about anywhere in the world.

Should be interesting - hope they can keep the cost down.

Now, if only it came in color :)

Sounds like the cost will remain the same, at least for now (most titles at $9.99). However, they're going to offer more than twice as many titles than Amazon right off the bat. Amazon get its butt in gear!

In Kindle news, the price has been dropped to $300.

I can understand why Amazon deleted it, but they handled the entire process very poorly. They should have offered everyone affected with another version of the novel.
The bottom line is that Amazon should not even have the power to delete something from your device, which is particularly troubling with the Kindle when you also don't know how many times you can download something after you purchase it.
