Part II: Defense

About a year ago RhodeIslandBuck started a thread by posting his All-Jim Tressel Era Team.

I've finally gotten around to putting together the info I need to do a poll for the Buckeye Planet consensus all Tressel era team.

I've listed all of the starters from the beginning of the season during his tenure. I've also added any awards they received during their playing time and where they were drafted by the NFL.

I plan on doing similar polls for the Cooper, Bruce, Woody & pre-Woody eras as well.

To save space I'm just doing a single poll for the entire offense.

So vote for the following:

Two Defensive Ends
Two Defensive Tackles
Two Outside Linebackers
One Middle Linebacker
Two Safeties
Two Cornerbacks
One Punter
Two Kick Returners

That means you should cast a total of 14 votes.

Some players are listed at multiple positions due to being starters at different spots during their careers.

Players are listed alphabetically by last time.

Players who only spent one year under Coach Tressel are NOT included (so no LeChuck, Tyson Walter, Derek Ross, Jonathon Wells, Darnell Sanders, Jamar Martin, Courtland Bullard or Steve Bellisari). That same criteria will be in placed for the previous eras as well (So no Jeff Uhlenhake or Vince Workman for Coop  ).

So without further adieu, the nominees:

Just in case it's not too late to change it, Malcolm Jenkings comes across as a mixture of Jenkins and Jennings.

Well crap.

Figures I'd get a typo somewhere. lol

(I forgot to list Anderson Russell as well)

Edit: Looks like I can't spell Maurice either.

---One of you kind Mods wouldn't want to fix my two typos would'ya?

I think "Wilhelm" has one "l", but I could be wrong.

Anyway, here's how I voted:

DE: Will Smith, Mike Kudla (might change Kudla to Gholston at the end of the season)
DT: Tim Anderson, Quinn Pitcock
OLB: A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter (Cie Grant a very close third)
MLB: Matt Wilhelm (probably would change it to James Laurinaitis at the end of the season)
CB: Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Gamble (Antonio Smith a very close third)
S: Mike Doss, Will Allen (both are no-brainer selections)
P: Virtual toss up between Andy Groom and B.J. Sander - gave it to Groom
KR: Ted Ginn. Anyone who doesn't vote for him needs to check into the Betty Ford Clinic...

My Vote:

DE: Will Smith, Vernon Gholston
DT: Tim Anderson, Quinn Pitcock
OLB: A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter
MLB: James Laurinaitis
CB: Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Gamble
S: Mike Doss, Donte Whitner (Also considered Will Allen, but I love to see Whitner hit :))
P: B.J. Sander (Toss up with Groom)
KR: I wanted to save Teddy for PRs, so I picked Gamble (which means of course that I clicked the wrong box, whoops)

I went along similar lines until we got to KR. You had to love Ginn's ability to take it all the way on any given second, but he also had a propensity for putting the ball on the ground that Chris Gamble didn't have. I went with Gamble and am heading towards Palm Springs as we write.

My picks match yours, with these difference:

Gholston and Laurinaitis over Kudla and Wilhelm, based on them playing this year like last year.

I went with Whitner over Will Allen. (I have no brain :wink2:)

But leaving off Wilhelm and Darrion Scott were tough.

And why was there no Fox at safety option? :tongue2:

Me:

DE: Will Smith and Vern Gohlston

DT: Anderson and Peterson

OLB: Hawk and Carpenter

MLB: Wilhelm in a close one, JL might take over after another good year

Safety: Went with Will Allen for his better pass defense skilla and Mike Doss for the SS

CB: Gamble and Jenkins, not even close imo

P: Groom

KR: Ginn

OK Will Smith is the only one to get every vote so far. 1 person did not vote for AJ Hawk. I'd like to know who that was and why. I can see some explanations for not voting Doss or Ted Ginn on KR, but not for AJ Hawk? Very interesting.

Before I vote, can I write in Jay Richardson as a DT? My bold prediction is he may make his mark as a DT in the Pros... he can bring speed to the inside, may not have quite enough to be an end in the pros... plus, he has the frame to put on DT weight...

(also a homer vote)
