All new Fiery Crash Goodness

Is it national policy or something in Russia to have a camera in your car ? I've seen so many crazy videos like this where something incredible is caught on video in Russia because they have the camera running. I know the roads there can be absolutely treacherous, but is that the reason ? Just curious.

As to the video, that is absolutely insane. Surely there were more than a few deaths involved. I don't know what I would think if I were to experience something like that while driving.

I'm pretty sure Japan has a similar law. It would be useful for determining the cause of accidents but I don't like it at all from a privacy standpoint.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner catches fire at gate at Boston airport

U.S. officials are investigating a fire on a Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliner in Boston after a Japan Airlines Co. flight from Tokyo, the latest setback for the jet following electrical faults on other planes last month.

Flames about 2 feet high shot out of an avionics compartment in the jet's belly, and there was a small explosion afterward, Massachusetts Port Authority
Fire Chief Robert Donahue said. No passengers were aboard as the plane sat at a Logan International Airport gate.

The 787 has suffered a string of mishaps with electrical systems in recent weeks. On Dec. 4, a United Airlines flight from Houston to Newark, N.J., made an emergency landing after it appeared that one of its power generators failed. On Dec. 13, Qatar Airways said it had grounded one of its three 787 jets because of the same problem United had experienced. On Dec. 17, United said a second 787 in its fleet had developed electrical issues.

There was another 787 with issues at Logan today.

Yesterday a fire started in the cargo hold of a Japan Air 787 due to batteries and electronics at Boston's Logan Airport. Today fuel stopped venting on a Japan Air 787 as it was leaving Logan Airport and a fuel leak erupted. Emergency crews are on the scene.
This is the second issue in two days, and marks the sixth blemish to the 787's record in 35 days. It is unclear if this is the same plane that had an issue yesterday, although we are hearing that it might be a second 787 in Japan Air's fleet with an issue.
UPDATE: This is not the same 787 as the one that had issues yesterday.

Debris Of F-16 Missing In Italy Believed Found, Search Focuses On Spot

Italian Coast Guard divers searching for a missing American F-16 and its pilot were focusing on Tuesday on waters where a fishing boat found debris believed to belong to the jet, a Coast Guard official said.

The debris, including fragments of carbon steel, was found floating in the northern Adriatic overnight, Rear Admiral Francesco Saverio Ferrara said. The U.S. Air Force said in a statement on Tuesday it was thought to be wreckage from the missing aircraft.

?We hope to find out more during the day so we can have a more complete picture of what happened,? Ferrara said.

The missing jet took off from Aviano Air Base on a training exercise on Monday evening, and the control tower lost contact with the plane at about 1900 GMT.

Search-and-rescue operations are being conducted by sea from the port of Ravenna, and Air Force planes from Aviano are spearheading the search from above, Ferrara said.

Snow and rain hampered the operation overnight, and on Tuesday fog was hampering visibility, the Coast Guard said.

Aviano is the base for the U.S. Air Force?s 31st Fighter Wing. The Air Force said a board of officers would investigate the incident.

?Wing leadership remains hopeful that we will safely rescue our pilot,? an Air Force statement said.

Pilot still hasn't been recovered...

Aviano launches F-16s to find missing pilot after crash in Adriatic

The Air Force?s 31st Fighter Wing launched at least two F-16 Fighting Falcons on Wednesday to join the search for one of its pilots missing since late Monday, according to wing officials.

Officials did not say how many of their fighters would ultimately join in the effort, citing security reasons.

The fighters join Italian and U.S. aircraft and ships searching for Capt. Lucas Gruenther, the wing?s chief of flight safety, whose F-16 disappeared over the Adriatic during a night training mission.

Lucas Gruenther, Missing F-16 Pilot In Italy, Found Off Coast Of Pesaro

Italian coast guards on Thursday recovered the body of the pilot of an F-16 US Air Force jet that went missing over the Adriatic Sea three days ago during a training mission, ANSA news agency reported.

The plane is believed to have crashed due to a technical malfunction while it was flying back at night to the US base of Aviano in northeast Italy.

The body was found at around 1300 GMT some four nautical miles (7.4 kilometres, 4.6 miles) from the port of Pesaro, the Italian news report said.

A fishing boat had recovered a helmet and a parachute in the same area on Wednesday.
