Five die in fiery ambulance crash

ANTWERP " An accident Friday evening which killed five area residents " three of whom were Antwerp EMS workers " and injured two others when an Antwerp ambulance, operating with lights and sirens, hit a tractor-trailer rig in Paulding County remains under investigation.

Killed were Antwerp Emergency Medical Technicians Sammy Smith, 64, Heidi McDougall, 31, and Kelly Rager, 25, all of Antwerp, and patients the EMTs were transporting, Robert Wells, 64, and his wife, Armelda, 60, of Hicksville.

Injured were Matt McDougall, 31, Antwerp, the fourth EMS worker and Heidi's husband, and driver of the semi, Gerald Chapman Jr., 54, Bryant, Ind. McDougall was taken by air ambulance to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was listed in "fair" condition Saturday afternoon. Chapman was taken by a rescue unit to Paulding County Hospital, Paulding, where he was treated and released.

LENEXA, Kan. -- Three people died on Saturday in a multi-car accident in Lenexa, Kan. on southbound I-435 at K-10.

"It's like, right when it it, it burst into flames. It's like somebody put fuel on the fire and it exploded," Mike Stroth, witness, said.

Witnesses said dozens of passers-by stopped to help and used fire extinguishers to put out the flames.

3 Die In Fiery Wreck

HOUSTON -- Three people died in a fiery crash on the East Freeway near the East Loop Saturday night. The fatal wreck shut down most of the freeway lanes for hours.

Police said the driver of a Dodge van was speeding and trying to switch lanes near McCarty when he hit the back of a Toyota Corolla at about 8:30 p.m.

The impact caused the gas tank of the car to ignite, causing the entire vehicle to catch fire.

Investigators said the driver of the van may have been intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.​
