BCS looking for voters for new poll
Committee wants former players, coaches, media

NEW YORK - The Bowl Championship Series has a plan for a new college football poll, and hired a company Tuesday to find voters.

The new poll, which would be added to the BCS weekly rankings, would consist of former players, coaches, administrators and members of the media, the BCS said in a statement.

Harris Interactive, a marketing research and polling firm that operates The Harris Poll, “is in the process of contacting a random sample of individuals nominated by the conferences and Notre Dame to determine interest in participating in the poll,” BCS coordinator and Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg said in the statement.

BCS spokesman Bob Burda said Harris would be in charge of coordinating the poll and counting the votes on a weekly basis. The Big 12 and National Football Foundation will still be responsible for compiling the weekly BCS standings, Burda said.

A decision by the 11 Division I-A conferences and Notre Dame on whether to use the new poll could be made by mid-July.

“I am generally supportive of the concept (of a new poll),” Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said. “We have not seen a formal presentation on it yet so it’s premature for me to comment on the specifics. I’ve been aware of it and like the fact that it has some independence. It is appealing to me that an outside organization would oversee the administration.”

The move comes following the decision by two major news organizations to opt out of the BCS ranking system, which determines the two teams that play in its national championship game.

In December, The Associated Press told the BCS to stop using its media poll in its weekly formula; ESPN withdrew from the coaches’ poll last week. The coaches’ poll remains part of the BCS rankings, and coaches agreed for the first time to reveal their votes for the final regular season poll.

The AP poll and the ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll had been the major components of the BCS rankings, and last season they held more weight than ever. The polls each counted for one-third of a team’s BCS grade, with a compilation of computer rankings making up the other third.

USA Today will continue compiling the coaches’ poll.

I give it two years

The initial purpose of the computer rankings was to appease the AP poll. AP voters were worried (and it seems rightly) that being a part of the selection process would change their status from "reporting the news" to "making the news".

The original purpose of the BCS poll was to eliminate split champions between the AP and Coach's poll.

Unbiased/objective =/= competent

How bout we just 86 all the polls in the BCS formula & use the computer rankings for their original purpose?

To create an unbiased, objective, and fair National Title Game ..
Everyone loved the computers until they *GASP* contradicted the human polls, at which "everyone knew" the computers were wrong. :ohwell:

That's just great...let's assemble a poll to select participants in the "national championship" game. Heaven forbid we actually let the participants earn their entry on the playing field. :shake:

I love the games but I hate the system...what a farce.

Not me. I'd much rather have 100% computer selection than give the Mike Lupicas or Bill Rhodens of the world (who don't watch the games, don't care about CFB, and have axes to grind) any say in who plays for the National Championship.

Most of the media is around to cover pro sports. They have no idea what's going on when it comes to CFB.

More times than not, it is decided on the playing field. In 2002, the System worked perfectly. And, I can make a pretty good argument that the system worked pretty well all of the other BCS years.

Hmm, I cant think of anyone that would be less biased then former players...Glad to see they may have a say in the BCS. Remember how Carson Palmer said something to the effect that he was just voting Leinhert and Bush 1/2 and no one else?

Worst BCS moment in history was in 03 when USC got "snubbed" and the commish of the BCS is all apologies. In my view, the system did EXACTLY what it was supposed to do, and that is, of course, seperate 3 (or more) like teams. And that is what he should have said, "Look folks, you want a game that pits the two best teams in the country, and we developed a system whcih we believe seperates otherwise like teams. USC is a fine team, but fact is OU and LSU played harder schedules and ended up with the same record. In our system, that means they "deserve it" more."

I agree with the comment Misanthrope made whole heartedly.... A large part of the point of the Computers was to take the human componant - fallible as it is, due to bias or region or the simple fact that you can't watch 60 games in one day - out of it... well, lessen the impact.

03 provides another fine example of this human componant. OU loses 2 of it's last 2 games and ends up falling from #1 to #3, one spot ahead of OSU which ended the season crushing K-State, the very same K-State that handed "the greatest team of all time" it's first L - and did so convincingly.

The computers think Team A is better than Media darling? Hmmm... maybe media darling isn't really as great as everone thinks.

Agreed. Any USC fan that's gonna bitch about getting snubbed that year is out of his mind. If not for that 'snubbing,' there's no way they get a share of that National Title.

If you tell me that the Trojans were a better team than LSU on a neutral field, fine. I can buy that. But that Sugar Bowl wasn't a neutral field, & nobody was beating the Tigers on that day.

And besides, if you lose a game in CFB you lose all right to bitch about where you get placed ... Bottom line. If you want no arguments, win out. Period. The only time there's a valid argument is if there're 3 undefeated teams for the two spots. Otherwise, take your 1 loss and go cry elsewhere.
