You may be right about diet soda, but IMO the biggest difference between the new fake sugar and the old fake sugar is we don't have much history on what the new fake sugar will do to you. When diet soda first hit the market nobody was worried about negative side effects - it took years for those to be recognized. Folks are saying splenda is safe because it is made from sugar, but we really do not know.

Problem I have with diet soda (and I confess to drinking it) is that you can tell yourself it is harmless and suck down a case a day. That is a lot of splenda for your body to filter out.

This is true, excess is still bad for you. I drink maybe 24 oz of diet pop a day and cut it there...but moderation is ok. Compare this to coffee though. I'm sure 90% of the people drink at least 3 cups of coffee daily. That's 18 cans of pop worth of caffeine and that all goes to your heart. I would argue that coffee drinking is 10X worse for you that drinking diet pop.

Back to the topic at hand, it all goes back to the simple formula, take in less calories, burn more. No matter what diet/plan you go on, that is your solution.

for a couple bucks you could drop a hit of acid, and drink water all night. You would laugh more than anyone else there, and I guarantee you won't give two shits about getting any late night eats. Probably not all that good for you, but cheap, and no calories that I know of, unless you count the little tiny piece of paper. :wink2:

Studies have shown that having 2 drinks a day (for men) actually lowers the mortality rate. This only applies to moderate drinking. Alcohol in small doses stimulates the liver to produce a compound called apo A1, which is the major compound in HDL (the good cholesterol). HDL clears the arteries of plaque, which is why alcohol helps people live longer. This is true for all forms of alcohol, not just red wine, which has been frequently cited as something with health benefits.

Obviously, too much alcohol does terrible things to the liver.

Mr. I, at your weight (270 IIRC), you may be able to handle 3 drinks a day. :wink2:

Note - I am not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once (just not last night).

BB, did you just call me fat?
I'm going to avoid it altogether until I get to my optimal weight (I believe it'll be about 230-240). I am pretty tall with a big build, and when I was 255-260 in college I was about 8% body fat. Since, muscle has deteriorated somewhat so I am thinking that weight will do me well for my build and height. After I get there, I'll work on my 2 per day
