Alamo Bowl - Texas 26, Iowa 24 (Dec. 30, 2006)

We went from a potential contender for the MNC to a second rate bowl game in 3 weeks for 2 reasons.

1) Big steaming pile of shit for a secondary, but that has a lot more to do with coaching than players.

2) Colt McCoy's injury. He should not have played against A&M. He could barely grip the damn football. Yes, I am very good at hindsight. If anyone has an opening for a monday morning quarterback, I'm your guy.

Okay, 3 reasons, but the third is only for this thread.

3) UT is not as good as last year.

Hold off on betting your valuable e-cash until we hear if Colt McCoy is cleared to play. Right now, senior walkon Matt McCoy (no relation) is practicing with the first team. I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think he has completed 1 pass in his entire career.:bonk: Starting WR Quan Cosby is the emergency QB. Think Anquan Boldin and the 2004(?) Sugar Bowl against Georgia. No thank you.

Another thing to keep in mind: The previously infallible Gene Chizik has taken the head coaching job at ISU. Secondary coach and co-defensive coordinator Duane Akina will have the reins for the Alamo Bowl. I have no idea what changes, if any, that will have. Yes, I said the secondary coach. The secondary. See reason 1 above. Weeeeeeeeeee! (that will be the sound in Drew Tate's head on Dec 30).

I'm not being fair. The consensus is that Chizik was more or less in complete control this year. I swear to God that statement isn't an Xrayrandyism. Akina has a damn good resume.

And congrats on.......well........all that cool shit that has happened to the Bucks this year. I would've posted earlier but I've been out of the country for most of the season. And apologies for not being able to participate in the BP poll.

Glad to see you stop by again. That is some interesting insight into what's wrong with Texas... but Iowa is still pretty average on a good day. Put Charles in the slot and they'll still try to cover him with a lber  (Gonzo lit them up fron the slot)

Anyone point out the tOSU- Texas symmetry?

tOSU:
2004: Alamo bowl
2005: Fiesta bowl in the year before playing for the MNC in the same city
2006: beat Texas; BCS MNC game

Texas:
2004: Rose bowl in the year before playing for the MNC in the same city
2005: beat tOSU; BCS MNC game
2006: Alamo bowl

Vince Young finished 2nd to Bush in the Heisman
Troy Smith finished 2nd to Bush in % of possible points

Mack Brown has a secretary named Tressel. Jim Tressel has a secretary named Brown.

And so on.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was cleared Thursday to play in the Alamo Bowl.
McCoy's status was in doubt after he severely pinched a nerve in his neck in the final minute of a 12-7 loss to Texas A&M on Nov. 24.

My initial thought was that UT wins this one easily. Then I remembered that I thought they'd smack Texas A&M in Austin, and they ended up losing. The better question is whether people will be calling for Mack Brown to be fired if he loses this one.

No one will be calling for Mack Brown to be fired if he loses the Alamo Bowl. He just won a national title.

While I'm glad Colt was cleared to play, he was also cleared to play against A&M. And some of you saw how uncharacteristically shitty he was that game because he was nowhere near 100%. However, a 70% Colt McCoy is better than a 100% Matt McCoy.

thomps, I hope that trend continues into next year.
