Akron Zips (Official Thread)

I'm watching the weather channel on Friday morning...one of their weather highlight reels comes on..."a 25 car pileup on Thursday on 224 for the Akron - Kent St. game"...yowers! Showed video clips of 224 and 241. I was actually thinking about going to the game, but it sounds as if I would have missed it and my own turkey from this nightmare!

The Akron HS city championship was every Turkey Day in the Bowl...
Can only think of one year that passing won THE game... 1971 maybe...
Kenmore beat Garfield (who was favored by 40 and ranked #6).. by 40...
and there were 3 Rams that went on to play in NFL from that losing team...

but there were numerous games that were brutally cold and wicked...

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Akron dreams of a bowl berth
Thursday, December 1, 2005

The Mid-American Conference East football race seemed topsy-turvy near the end, but a champion ultimately was produced.
Now the Akron Zips hope to land a bigger prize.
A victory over Northern Illinois in tonight’s MAC Championship Game at Detroit’s Ford Field will give the Zips their first league title at any level and send them back to Ford Field on Dec. 26 for the Motor City Bowl. Akron has not played in a bowl game since the program moved up to Division I-A in 1987.
This truly is uncharted territory for Head Coach J.D. Brookhart’s team. The Zips fell a game short of the league title game and a bowl bid a year ago and were picked to finish fourth in the East this season.
The Zips (6-5, 5-3) won three of their final four games and received all the help they needed to reach the MAC title game for the first time. In their minds, just making it to the final is not enough.
“We want to win that football game,” Brookhart said.
Akron beat Northern Illinois, 48-42, in overtime Sept. 24. The Huskies came back from a 28-point deficit to force OT before Brett Biggs’ 1-yard touchdown run won it for the Zips.
Northern Illinois (7-4, 6-2) has the MAC’s top-ranked offense, but Akron overcame the loss of starting safeties Dion Elie and Chevin Pace to injuries and led the league in defense. In their last two wins over Ohio and Kent State, the Zips gave up just 6 points.
Linebacker Jay Rohr (Jackson) has a team-best 104 tackles for the Zips, allowing an average of 322.0 yards.
“It started last spring — we let the defense tee off on the offense a little, and they started developing an attitude,” Brookhart said. “When you have a group of guys like we have playing together with energy, good things are going to happen.”
The Huskies’ ability to rally against the Zips in their regular-season game is an example of how potent their offense is. Northern Illinois averages 452.5 yards.
“They are ... capable of putting up some big numbers,” Brookhart said. “They play with great fundamentals and great speed.”
Northern Illinois tailback Garrett Wolfe leads the MAC’s second-ranked rushing attack. He averages 163.8 rushing yards and has 1,310 yards for the season.
Wolfe is not listed in the NCAA rankings because he missed three games with a knee sprain. If he were eligible, his rushing average would rank third in the nation.
“You have to maintain your gap assignments and keep him cuffed,” Brookhart said. “As long as we do that, we should be OK. If not, we’ll have a very good back running all over the place.”
Wolfe was shut down the first time he faced the Zips. He finished with just 52 yards on 21 carries.

Last year Akron got screwed over because they were the only eligible team that didn't get to go to a bowl. This year there are 56 bowl spots and 63 eligible teams so several eligible teams won't make it to bowls. I'm not sure how conference championship games count against bowl eligibility, but if Akron loses they will be 6-6, which isn't bowl eligible. I guarantee no one will take Akron for a bowl unless they win the MAC.

Especially since Toledo already got the conference's 2nd tie-in, to the GMAC bowl. There could be a third, but even if there was, it would be Miami or Western Michigan, not Akron. They need to win or will stay home.

Too bad for the MAC the Motor City Bowl will probably have an empty spot that the Big 10 can't fill, but they already have 1 team there. Damn the BCS for hopefully taking 2 Big 10 teams :p
I've been to several Akron games and they don't seem to get much support, but I wouldn't want to watch a game in the worlds 2nd largest outdoor toilet either.

what can I say.. Akron is just a sports Juggernaut nowadays....

playing for the MAC championship in football... next will be BCS...
#1 in country in soccer... and into NCAA quarter finals... soon to be natl champs...
and basketball team in undefeated... hey... 2-0 is still undefeated... how long till the NCAA Sweet 16...

a new sports legend in the making :)

with so many OSU-related athletes on their football and basketball teams, we should just adopt them as our JV squads... except in soccer.. where they rule...

Go Zips

This is only the start for Akron football.
No, they will not be in OSU league. But they will be the class of the MAC.
Laugh at me if you want, but you will see.

Last year #1 recruiting class in the MAC. Beautiful new facilities, including a new field house that Jim Tressel himself, called the nicest he has ever seen.
Others have called it the nicest in the nation.
New stadium within 5 years. Last year MAC coach of the year.

I don't feel good about tonight though.

Talk about no respect, the soccer team. They were ranked #1 in the nation.
They defeated 5 top 20 teams, including the team that was #1. They have 1 loss to a top 5 ranked team. They lost that game 1-0 on the road. When the seeding comes out for the tourney, Akron is #8. WTF is that?

Fear The Roo.
