Akron Zips (Official Thread)

Lost in the resurgence of Penn State, Alabama, and Notre Dame this year is an amazing story from the MAC. Akron finished last year tied for first in the MAC East, and was the only bowl eligible team not to get an invite last year. Of course, they were thought to have peaked then and with Charlie Frye leaving for the NFL, no one gave them a chance to compete for even an upper division finish this year.

With Northern Illinois winning tonight, Akron, if they beat rival Kent State (who is 0-9 against I-A this year) Saturday, will complete a miracle run to the championship game, ahead of both Miami and Bowling Green, both of whom had basically their entire offenses in tact from last year, and both of whom received top 25 consideration at the start of the year.

Just wanted to give a shout out to our hard-working Ohio bretheren. Congrats to the Zips for a great year.

just shows how crappy the MAC is this year. Akron is a joke. No offense to you Akron Zip fans out there. Had the weather not been shitty as hell last week, Miami may have actually been able to play a REAL football game against BG. I'd take Miami in a bowl game over Akron any day. Nance, Robinson, Nande...all studs!

a bunch?

Miami is 7-4...a loss to tOSU, BG in bad whether, a good N. Ill team on the road, and yes their one bad loss to C. Michigan. So id' say they lost 1 game they shouldn't have.

How does the tiebreaker work? If BG akron and Miami tie, why does Akron go?

I meant combined...1 or 2 each.

The tiebreaker is, well, really freaking weird. As it was explained, Akron beat Bowling Green, and lost to Miami, and I believe Miami lost to BGSU and beat Akron. However, head-to-head can be trumped as a tiebreaker by the conference winning percentage of the opponents you play in the other division when there are more than 2 teams involved, for some reason that no one could quite figure out.

So, here goes: Western Michigan and Northern Illinois played. If NIU won (which they did) then Akron won the tiebreaker based on the head-to-head victory over BGSU. However, if Western Michigan had won, then Bowling Green would have won the tiebreaker because they played teams with a combined better conference record in the West than Akron did. And furthermore, Toledo had beaten WMU and lost to NIU, so it set up the hilarious scenario that if NIU won, NIU and Akron would advance to the championship game (assuming Akron beats KSU). If Western Michigan had won, then Bowling Green and Toledo would have gone to the title game...so one game determined both participants.

Miami I believe had no chance because they lost to BGSU, and played teams with a combined worse conference record in the West than Akron did...or something like that...so as soon as they lost to BGSU, they were out of the equation, even though their victory ensured that BGSU wouldn't win the division outright.

All I can figure (after saying WTF?) is that they anticipated that there would be many years that more than 2 teams tied for a division lead (like this year and last year in the East). So, since every conference game counts the same, I figure the conference wants to reward teams who beat better teams from the other division, because they would have done more, I guess. It sucks though because you have no control over that...and thus a team that you beat can still advance to the championsip instead of you.

Seems convoluted to me, but that's what I figure the rationale is.

:roll1: . Being able to play in crummy weather is just part of football.

Crappy or not, Miami and Bowling Green lost a bunch of games they shouldn't have...chronic underachievers this year.

Well said. Miami might be better on paper, but Akron got it done on the field. They deserve credit.
