Powers shares game plan

Now coach, former Buchtel football star promises new attitude, stresses studies

The feeling of a community coming together was touching.
Ricky Powers, the new football coach at his alma mater, Buchtel High School, made that the emphasis during his meet-and-greet with supporters Wednesday evening at the Ed Davis Community Center.
Powers, a 1988 Buchtel graduate, was a star running back for the Griffins when they won back-to-back state championships in 1987 and 1988. He later starred at the University of Michigan and then played in the NFL for the Detroit Lions, the Browns and the Baltimore Ravens.

Buchtel coach Powers is man with a message By Patrick McManamon
Published on Thursday, Aug 23, 2007

You call the high school coach's cell phone and the message veers quickly from ''leave your name and number.''
''I make mistakes,'' you hear. ''I make bad decisions. I do things I know are wrong, but I do them anyway.
''I know better.
''Thank God we can start over.''
It's part greeting, part philosophy, part catharsis. And, of course, part leave me a message.

Buchtel was plowed under by Walsh Jesuit 42-14. Because of my boy's fall league baseball practice, I only caught the last quarter of the game. Walsh is div.ll I believe, and has an incredible number of players in the 6'2" to 6'7"
height range. It was almost like watching a high school team play a middle school team.:)
