sometimes SWA has roundtrips from Midway to LAX for about $158...

I've been searching flights to different cities over the past few years and if there is a decent rate, Expedia will have it.
I try to check out a different state or U.S. city every year and usually fly so I'm familiar with online plane tickets. This year I'll be visiting the g/f in Houston and once again, Expedia has the best fares.

9 times out of 10 (from my experience) the airline's Web site will have the same fare a little cheaper than Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, etc. because they don't have to pay a commission for the sale.
Usually I'll use Orbitz, etc. to find the flights and get a general idea, then check the airline's site for the same flights. Also check Southwest obviously. Sometimes the discount airlines like Independence Air, USA 3000, Hooters Air, Jetblue, etc. can be good too.

try to book as far in advance that you can most of the time they will give you somewhat of a break on the tickets as opposed to booking at the last minute.

I usually find the cheapest tickets with travelocity or whatever, then buy the tickets from the airline site which, besides often being cheaper, also tend to give you extra miles for purchasing through their site and sometimes more options. . .

Agreed. I also find this effective when booking hotels. I have actually found cheaper hotel rooms by going directly through the hotel after first searching hotels.com and the like.

I had slightly mixed results with hotels when booking for Vegas. Some of the hotels' own Web sites flat out state that they're 10 bucks cheaper than any other travel Web site's price. Others had cheaper rates with one of the large travel sites. It seems to be more hit and miss than airlines.
