(Aircraft) Carrier Classic: UNC vs. Sparty, 11-11-11, Anchors Aweigh

You want to honor Veterans Day and the Military? Why not play a game in Chicago and invite the men and women stationed at Great Lakes, the Michigan and Illinois Guard & Air Guard and anyone with a copy of their DD 214?

You don't need a gimmick, a rather expensive gimmick at that, to show your appreciation.

Amen.

North Carolina, Michigan State close to aircraft carrier game

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina and Michigan State are closing in on a deal to play a basketball game on an aircraft carrier next season.
Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said on his radio show Monday night that the teams hope to play on Veteran's Day in San Diego on a carrier.
Larry Gallo, a senior associate athletic director at UNC, said Tuesday that a contract isn't in place yet.
"We feel as though all systems are go, we're just trying to finalize" details, Gallo said. "But until you have a contract, a deal hasn't been consumated."
Gallo said discussions also involve the U.S. government and a promoter.
Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis declined to comment Tuesday, though he spoke in November about the school's hope to play a game on a carrier.
"It's something that we continue to pursue with the Navy," Hollis said. "From our perspective, it would be something where Americans could reach out to those who protect our borders and create a national celebration around it."

An outdoor basketball game is taking a real risk; they can't control the weather. Just a slight breeze could effect the shooting (and game outcome), not to mention the possibility of rain. :(

It's an OOC game in November in a sport where one loss doesn't eliminate you from title contention. The outcome is less important than the event in this case.

Carrier Classic set for USS Carl Vinson

SAN DIEGO -- The Navy has given final approval for the Morale Entertainment Foundation to stage the Carrier Classic basketball game between North Carolina and Michigan State on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson on Veterans Day.

It will be the first NCAA hoops game on an active flat top.

Rear Admiral Dennis Moynihan, the Navy's chief spokesman, and Mike Whalen, director of the Morale Entertainment Foundation, said the game on 11-11-11 on San Diego Bay will be played without cost to taxpayers and without operational issues that would adversely affect the Navy.

"We think that the game is going to be a celebration of service to all veterans. We're excited about that," Moynihan said Friday.

The Carl Vinson and its sailors have attracted considerable attention since early May, when the carrier was used to bury Osama bin Laden at sea after he was killed by Navy SEALs.

Contd....

ESPN just aired a time-lapse of the court being constructed up to a North Carolina shoot-around. Unless I missed something, 100% of the UNC players' shots rimmed out or were air balls.

Ever hear of a basketball game getting raind out?

Tonight
nt_chancerain.gif
Partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers late. Lows 48 to 55. Light winds. Chance of measurable precipitation 20 percent.
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=32.715329,-117.157255

With tipoff at 4 p.m. on the West Coast, the sun will be up when the game starts. The carrier's "island," the only raised structure on the flight deck, most likely will block out most of the sun so players shouldn't have to fight the glare. As the sun sets, the temperature will start to drop. The San Diego forecast calls for a high of 70 degrees, with a temperature of about 65 at tipoff and falling after sundown. Breezes and wind also could affect shooting and passing.
"I really do believe that the elements will be a big factor in the game, so you've got to be able to make adjustments," Williams said. "We better be running hard enough that we don't get cold (when the sun disappears). I am concerned about that."
Williams did not have his team practice outside in Chapel Hill to prepare. Marshall and center Tyler Zeller said that although they appreciate the uniqueness, they'd rather play indoors.
"I don't want to shoot and the ball go sailing one way or the other," Marshall said.
Zeller is concerned about the elements, too, and said he rarely played outside growing up in Washington, Ind.
"They've already got rid of my theory that the boat will move, so I'll have to get a new one," Zeller said with a laugh, citing a need for an excuse for any missed shots.

Moved to the college basketball forum for comments on the game.

I'm glad the sun is setting there. It was awash in too much light at the start, with the bright twilight sky, the artificial light standards and the lit-up ad board on the scorer's table.

The court is just going to go to [Mark May] now. ESPN just said they were having problems with the court being slippery. I would have never brought my team to play a game here. It wouldn't surprise me if somebody got seriously injured.

UNC's getting call every time down the court now.
