Ahmad Brooks Dismissed from Virginia

http://virginia.rivals.com/content.asp?cid=514271

Premium article so all I know is the first part of the first paragraph. Kicked off the team for some off the field trouble, recently decided to come back for another year of college.....sucks to be him. Sounds like he will go into the supplimental draft this year.

Just another guy Freeman wont have to compete with for the Butkus, Lombardi, etc.:wink2:

Seriously, I hope he gets it together. Man, Virginia has been having some problems lately.

It's official. What a waste of talent--Ahmad Brooks was supposed to be A.J. Hawk's biggest competition for LBs in the draft had he stayed healthy. Having to go in the supplemental draft isn't going to help him any.

3 football players released from program
From staff reports
Charlottesville Daily Progress
Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Virginia football coach Al Groh announced on Tuesday that linebacker Ahmad Brooks, safety Tony Franklin and defensive end Vince Redd are no longer part of his program.
"It is a privelege and not a right to wear a Cavaliers jersey and to represent our university and community," Groh said. "There are certain things that are vital and those things come into sharper focus and are multiplied when you're rebuilding, as we are. That's focus, commitment and dependability."
Groh did not disclose the specific reason for dismissing the three players, but stressed, "each circumstance is different."
All three players are currently enrolled in school, Groh said.
Virginia opens spring practice on Wednesday.

I think that Tony Franklin, who was becoming a promising DB, is out of the Cleveland area. What a waste all around.

Man, Virginia has been having some problems lately.
Not that Al Groh would have anything to do with that.

Top HS recruits coming in, top NFL talent going out, and he still manages to lose 4 or 5 games a season for five seasons in a row. Groh has seriously had some of the elite level talent in the country, and he's nursing a five year win % of .587 (37-26).

If Groh were at any "major" program in the country, he'd have been fired this year. What does Virginia do? Give him a contract extension through 2010. :roll2:

Seriously, how many seasons in a row has it been that we've been hearing prognosticators say, This is the season Virginia establishes themselves in the ACC?

No team has consistently underachieved like Virginia has over the last five years, not even Michigan.

Building on the ineptitude of the Virginia football program, they have a grand total of three--that's three--championships of any kind in their 117 years of football:

  • 1908 (7-0-1) South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association Champions
  • 1989 (10-3-0) Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Champions
  • 1995 (9-4-0) Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Champions

By the way, that 1908 team is the only team in their history that was undefeated, and even then they had a tie...not a single unblemished season in their history. They've been in the ACC for 51 years and have all of two co-championships. They have also finished ranked in only nine seasons, and the highest final ranking ever--ever--was 13th.

Have to agree with Mili here...I'm sure George Welsh is a nice old guy and all, but the most overrated streak, perhaps in all of sports, was his "13 years in a row with at least 7 wins" like it was some huge landmark accomplishment. That included a whole heap of 7-5 seasons, which would get a coach fired at a major program (come to think of it, 9-3 wasn't enough for Ealre Bruce).

Might as well pile on...

1987 8-4-0
1988 7-4-0
1989 10-3-0
1990 8-4-0
1991 8-3-1
1992 7-4-0
1993 7-5-0
1994 9-3-0
1995 9-4-0
1996 7-5-0
1997 7-4-0
1998 9-3-0
1999 7-5-0

Total 103-51-1 (.667)

So, in the greatest run of success in school history the winning percentage for that time wouldn't even crack the top-10 in all-time winning percentages. In other words, there are 10 teams that have a better winning percentage all-time than Virginia had in it's best stretch ever. Note the minimum of three losses per year...sound familiar?

49ers might gamble on Brooks

By MATTHEW BARROWS
May 30, 2006

The San Francisco 49ers will consider making a bid for former Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks in the July 13 supplemental draft, personnel director Scot McCloughan said Tuesday.

Last year at this time, Brooks was being mentioned in the same breath as A.J. Hawk - picked fifth overall in last month's draft - when it came to the nation's top linebackers. But the junior's status soon plummeted because of injuries and questions about his maturity.

After forgoing the draft and returning to Virginia for his senior season, Brooks was dismissed from the team in March for what coach Al Groh cited as "focus, commitment and dependability" problems. In 2003, the linebacker was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession - a charge that later was dismissed - and he further made his way into Groh's doghouse by skipping classes and practices.

Brooks will hold a workout for pro scouts at the Virginia campus June 22 and is preparing for the event at Competitive Edge Sports, an Atlanta-based outfit run by Chip Smith.

Smith admitted Tuesday that when Brooks arrived 11 weeks ago, he was so out of shape he vomited seven times during his first training session. But he has made progress since, Smith said, working out four hours a day, five days a week. And thanks to a better diet, he has dropped 20 pounds.

Smith said Brooks now weighs 268 pounds, five or so more than his playing weight at Virginia. He also has begun to shed the maturity issues that plagued him at Virginia.

"I told him I want him here every day at 9 a.m., not a minute more," Smith said. "He's usually sleeping on my couch when I arrive at 8:15."

McCloughan, who is in the midst of a background check on Brooks, said the baggage Brooks brings with him is a concern. But McCloughan said that would be weighed against the linebacker's potential, which at one point had him projected as a top-10 draft pick.

The son of former Washington Redskins defensive tackle Perry Brooks, Ahmad Brooks led the Cavaliers in tackles his first two seasons, and at 6-foot-4, he has the combination of size and speed NFL scouts covet.

"He can play any of the (linebacker) spots in a 3-4 defense," McCloughan said.

Smith said Brooks has recovered from the injuries that cut short his 2005 season and estimates he will run the 40-yard dash in the 4.5-second range.

"Ahmad is a Pro Bowl-type talent if he can stay focused," Smith said. "I have some NFL linebackers here right now. They stood back and watched him and said, 'Wow. He can really explode.' "

Like the regular draft, the order of the supplemental draft is determined by team records the previous year. If the 49ers were to take Brooks in, say, the third round of the supplemental draft, they would have to give up their third-round pick in the April 2007 draft.

McCloughan said Iowa State linebacker Jason Berryman and Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College linebacker David Dixon were two other names that would draw interest in the supplemental draft. The 49ers have an extra fourth-round pick next season from the Washington Redskins and likely will get compensatory picks after losing Julian Peterson and Andre Carter to free agency.

Definitely shows the difference in a kid like Brooks who has to be told to show up no later than 9 and a kid like AJ who was at the WHAC lifting at 6am each day.

If i recall correctly, Brooks and D'Andrea were to 2 top can't miss LB in the 02 class. Hopefully Mike can get healthy and have a terrific senior season...

How many rounds does the supplemental draft have? Can ayone explain it-I understand you have to give up a pick, but you never see 31 teams picking-how could there be a 3rd round?

I believe it's conducted like a regular draft, except teams usually "pass" on their selection. When a team feels like a player is worth giving up that corresponding pick in the next years draft, they will actually pick the player. For example, if no one feels that Brooks is worth losing their first round choice next year, they will all pass. However, maybe the Texans feel like he is worth a 2nd round pick, so they take him. Or maybe everybody thinks he's too risky, and continually "pass" their pick, until the Marvin Lewis says "Fuck it. I need someone to smoke weed with Chris Henry who is big enough to protect him so he doesn't need to carry a gun all the time. That's worth next year's 5th rounder." Then the Bengals would lose next years 5th rounder, and greatly improve the job market for police officers in SW Ohio.

Ahmad Brooks was even more of a can't-miss prospect than D'Andrea (from a pure talent standpoint, not grades--he had to go the prep school route). Brooks was the USA Today National Defensive Player of the Year coming out of high school, in the same year Clarett was was named Offensive POY, and the same designation given a few years later to Ginn.
