Student gunman talked out of violence in 'close call'
POSTED: 11:35 a.m. EDT, October 9, 2006

JOPLIN, Missouri (AP) -- A 13-year-old student fired an AK-47 inside his middle school Monday morning after confronting two others students and his principal, but no one was injured, authorities said.

The student was wearing a mask and pointed the assault rifle at Principal Steve Gilbreth, Assistant Superintendent Steve Doerr and two students, saying, "not to make me do this," Superintendent Jim Simpson said.

Simpson said the teen then fired a shot into the ceiling, breaking a water pipe, and said again, "Please don't make me do this."

"It was a very close call," Simpson said.

Doerr and Gilbreth persuaded the student to leave the building, where he was confronted by two police officers with weapons drawn. The student dropped the rifle and was taken into custody, Simpson said. The student's identity was not released.

Joplin police Officer Curt Farmer said officers found a note in the student's backpack indicating that he had placed an explosive in the school, which has about 700 students. Students in the school were moved to nearby Joplin Memorial Hall, and the school was closed while officers searched the building.

The student was wearing a mask and apparently had been planning an attack for a "long time," Simpson said. He didn't elaborate and said authorities did not know whether others were involved.

Joplin, which has about 40,900 residents, is in southwest Missouri, on the Kansas border about 140 miles south of Kansas City.

Schools across the country have been on alert after three deadly school shootings in three states in the span of a week, and several schools have been locked down or closed entirely during the past two weeks because of threats.

from their parents. which is where the blame for this should lie. you know everything there is to know about your fantasy football team but your unaware that your 13 yr old has made a bomb, stole an ak from you and has been planning an attack on his school for months? yeah... whatever. negligence in the workplace can loose a company money and your punishment is being fired. negligence as a parent can get people killed but apparently there are no reprisals for that...

Not particularly.

Exactly.

The make/model is irrelevant (sorry just a pet peeve of mine).

FWIW the odds of it being an AK-47 are slim to none...it was probably a Saiga, Norinco, Krinkov, Maddi etc...again not that it matters much.

Hey, no apology necessary. It doesn't make the situation any better if it is a hand gun, hunting rifle, or assault rifle. I definitely wasn't trying to imply otherwise and I apologize if that's how it came across.

I guess I can just come up with more plausible situations in which a teen could get his hands on a hunting rifle versus an assault rifle. Not that it is okay either way for the gun to be accessible by the teen.

As a teen an AR-15 (Colt HBAR) and a Springfield Armory M1A were both on the gun rack in my room. *shrug*

Heck a good portion of the year one and/or the other was in the trunk of my car while I was at school because I would head straight to the range after class to practice.

The problem is in identifying and then dealing apropriately with the kids (and adults) who are likely to go off the deep end and try to carry out such atrocities. Almost every single one of the idiots who carry out such acts show signs of instability long before they lose it.
