Sdgo: It was me who mentioned the Peterson thing. We never had a shot at the kid, but my point is, why not? This program has never EVER had a problem landing the most heralded RB recruits: Robert Smith, Clarett, even Sammy Maldanado was the # 1 HS RB the year we got him.

Running back at OSU is one of the most heralded positions in all of sports: its right up there with Centerfield for the Yankees, QB at Notre Dame, Center for the Fakers, etc. Going into the best kid's house and getting him to sign a LOI was never a problem for this program before, and I don't see why it all of a sudden is such a dilemna for this coaching staff.

Especially considering the fact that we could guarantee the kid major carries in his freshman year. Di said, "im sure alot of the kids were thinking that they dont want to sit two years behind a player that is already the focus of the offense as a freshman." But I don't buy that, either. This program has always gotten the RBs, no matter who was already ahead of him. Look at USC: they got Bush, White, etc. all at the same time.

I totally agree with you. We run the ball more than any other premiere(sp?) program out there without question. No one except maybe Auburn survives on the run more than us, and they are not even that good of a program. Factor in that it was well known that we didn't have an outstanding running back for this fall and we should have gotten the No1 or No2 recruit or both. We should have landed a guy that could come in and play everydown every game.

Oklahoma RB Adrian Peterson (official thread)

Man, I thought that Peterson was the real deal when I saw him in the Army All-American game last year, but I didn't think he'd be making a run at the Heisman as a true freshman.

He's got speed, power, moves, balance, and vision.

Best looking frosh RB since Herschel Walker, who had more speed but less moves. And yes, that includes a guy that filed a lawsuit against the NFL.

Actually this is when the crying on the sideline, and the injuries started happening for MoC. Peterson is getting stronger, against better competition. Where MoC got hurt against better competition.

I agree that Orton is still ahead of Peterson.

All I said was that Peterson was now "in the race". A little reading comprehension, please.

Also, Rodgers from Cal moved into the top 6 or so, despite the loss to USC. I would have liked to have seen that game, he started with 23 straight completions against a tough defense.

Orton is still the leader.

Leinart, Bush, Rodgers, Peterson, Morency (Okla St.), and Benson are 'in the race'.

Walter (Ariz St.), Arrington (Cal), Cadillac Williams, and Braylon Edwards are on the fringe, lurking as potential candidates.

Jason White, Darren Sproles, Chris Leak, David Greene, Alex Smith (Utah), Brad Smith, Ryan Moats (0 yards before injury Saturday), and Anthony Davis (missed too many games) are no longer serious contenders.

AP is a couple of steps ahead of MC in ability, attitude (from what I can decipher), and most importantly health. He took a hell of a beating vs. Texas and was going as strong at the end as the beginning of the game.

By way of comparison MC averaged 5.6 YPC and 112 YPG. Peterson is at a pace of 6.6 and 157 with no stingers and no hissy fits.

I also like to see RBs get the edge over QBs in the Heisman voting because QBs are as much a reflection of their overall program strength and offensive schemes as their personal ability (Ken Dorsey - although not a Heisman winner - was an average QB who benefitted from an OL that gave him all day to throw to great receivers while the D was respecting equally good RBs) . Heisman QB winners who failed in the NFL are almost routine. RBs certainly benefit from great lines, but to compete for the Heisman you still have to break tackles, show some speed and display a few moves.

All that said, there are voters who simply will not vote for a Frosh (I believe Keith Jackson said so publicly). But AP gets my vote.
