Addressing the on/off slow load times and related issues

We don't. And were it the sole cause of our previous issues, it would get nuked. The current implementation is much slimmer, a lot of garbage sliced out, effectively zero impact on the functionality of the forums themselves. But there are some quiet upsides. The arcade will be less abused. Each play now "costs" a small amount of points. An amount low enough that anyone who has some time and history on the site (like RLC) will have no problem playing as they please, but those who come here for that alone will quickly run out of options.

It's also the backbone for the Book, which has been well received, and additionally takes some administrative tasks that I want available to people (like name changes) out of the hands of the "staff", while putting enough of a cost on it that it can't be excessively abused.

Finally, it replaces one missing aspect of the medal system. Previously, we had to manually edit visiting fan's profiles to add an icon that represented the school they follow. I like clear visual representation of which guests represent what interests. Now, they can do it themselves quickly and easily on their first visit, and it will be plain to all.

The surface layer of the store is novelty, the deeper justification has more to do with reducing administrative workload and placing limits on some other novelty features.

As far as the slow load times from before, like I said, the estore was definitely a major contributing factor, but the truth is, we should be able to quadruple the number of queries that was producing without any tangible slowdown. One of the biggest problems was that the server hadn't been restarted in 277 (or so) days, and during that time a lot of the core software had been patched up, the kernel had been rewritten over 20 times, the db tables hadn't been optimized/repaired and quite a few had significant overhead, and there's still the rogue MySQL issue that has not yet been defined.

Sometimes it just decides to not be there. But just for a second.

I expect to hear back from Jelsoft on it today.

You made a great point though. There's a slimmed down no-nonsense no-frills version of the site available to everyone in the form of the archive (which is really just a seeding point for the search engines, but it does serve other purposes). If I find the opportunity, I might also make a new template (like BP_DayGame, etc.) that is nothing but the base forum, no add-ons.

Finally, a new version of vB is about to come out, and several hacks we use (including a large one) are now integrated as core features. I suspect this is going to further streamline things.

Anyway, the site's a bit faster today, and by the time I get up this afternoon (assuming I can sleep at some point here) I hope to wrap up the process and have it humming back at the speeds we enjoyed when the new machine first came online.
