Access GMAIL even if blocked at school or work....

Big Papa

Urban!!!!
My friend Mike asked me if there was a quick way to get around the firewall that keeps him from being able to access his Gmail at work. I was surprised at how easy it is.
I don?t understand why Gmail gets blocked at work. I think it is much better that people are having their personal conversations using [email protected] instead of representing the company with every list of jokes, funny images, or comical videos they forward.
But enough of my diatribe against poor policies in the workplace. You can access Gmail using a different URL! They usually only block some of the web addresses.

As a system administrator I will let you in on a few things:

1) If your admin knows ANYTHING he will find a proxy/firewall security package that will block out webmail.

2) There's several reasons to block it, one, I don't know if you're sending corporate data to other companies, I don't know if you're bringing a virus onto my network, in other words it's not secure.

3) Gmail includes Gchat and instant messaging is a HUGE time waster for any company.

4) If its that important to you connect via your cell phone.

Except for the part about being a system administrator that's exactly what I was going to say. I don't like that a lot of things are blocked at work, but do understand why. Especially since I work for a contractor to the military.

Thank you IAB. You are right OC, it is important to safeguard your company against unauthorized transmission of documents. I just thought the story was interesting.
