A Turning Point in The Big Ten

Brewster.....

Well, with respect to the first item, the Big Ten has replaced two of the league's "Good guys" with scumbags. As much as I hated Lloyd Carr as the coach of my Rival, I never thought he was a ethic-less scumbag. Glenn Mason was something of an anti-Brewster when it comes to recruiting. So, in that respect, Taos, I agree there has indeed been a change, and one which appears to bring with it a certain degree of .... shall we say... alternative competitiveness.

I agree that Glenn Mason is the anti-Brewster. However, I am questioning why (if I am reading correctly) is he a "scumbag." If you are referring to Zook and RR I will defer to people who know about them to talk about them. But if Brewster is one of those scumbags I beg to differ.

He came up here and had to mend A LOT of fences. What Cooper did to the Ohio football coaches Mason did the the MN football coaches. Brewster and staff visited ALL high schools in the state in an effort to reconnect. It is working as I know schools like Eden Prairie have a vastly higher image of Brewster than Mason. I know people that met with Mason - they said he acted arrogantly as if it was their pleasure to be recruited by MN. Parent after parent said Mason turned them off to the U. Brewster is much more of a grassroots, we are family, rah rah guy. In addition, the U's rivals of Wisconsin and Iowa may make fun of Brewster for going 1-10 but I have yet to hear a single word from their fan bases that would make him out to be a "scumbag."

I think Big 10 recruiting took a step up when Brewster took over for Mason. Now let us see if his coaching abilities are a step back or step up.

Fair enough. I only know a little about Brewster, so I can't really comment. I didn't intend for him to be lumped in the "scumbag" remark, but I can see how my loose sentence structure would leave that impression. I have little question about Brewster's ability to build relationships (as I understand it, that's his best skill) but he also "oversigned" about 5 kids this past year, which means he's expecting causalities. True, I never followed MN recruiting enough to know Mason's MO, but I think Brewster is probably much more willing to go with quantity over quality to build a class.

My definition of scumbag also includes those coaches who give up 28 point lead in bowl games.

Good riddance, Mason. Brewster is clearly a step in the right direction for Minny.
Indeed. As comparison between 2006 results will show v. 2007 results. (I would admit, however, that Brewster is changing scheme, and has a different kind of athlete in positions than what he'd desire (power running game v. a more balanced set)

I know Coop wins the "devil in disguise" contest on this site, but after years of never seeing an OSU recruiter at Moeller (or most of Cincinnati) during the Earl Bruce era, I was glad to look up and see Coop's face shortly after he became the Buckeyes' coach. The first fence Copper repaired was the one with the Cincinnati coaches.

I am glad to read that. However, I am from northeast Ohio. Akron through Cleveland had a sizeable segment of people that always HATED Cooper and sent kids to schools such as UM, PSU, and ND. I mean no disrespect to Cooper since in my mind he elevated us over where Bruce had the program.

BKB,

I think some JUCO are at the U early so they go to last year's class. Also, the U has always taken some borderline academics...they needed to in order to get some talent. To me there is no diff in that aspect between Mason and Brewster. I am sure that I will learn and relate more info about Brewster as time goes on.
