A School Paper Thump Could Love?

sandgk

Watson, Crick & A Twist
Well - there is freedom of the press, there is sex education and then there is shock value.

Hard to tell - without the articles now withdrawn from the schools web site - just how offensive the latest edition of the Winnachronicle truly was. It is the paper for Winnacunnet High School.

A titillating story with a photo titled "Why men love women who love women," perhaps? Or what about the questionnaire that includes anal sex as a topic?

Anyway - here is the article, about the reaction to the same.

Some parents are protesting the "sex" edition of the student newspaper at Winnacunnet High School. Several said they were especially offended by a photograph of two women kissing under the headline, "Why men love women who love women," a quiz question about anal sex, and an interview with an unnamed custodian who said he had found a vibrator in the girls' shower.
"Those articles offended me personally as a parent," said Venus Merrill, a school board member. "It's not something you want to read with your 10-year-old and it's not something that should be going home."
Principal Randy Zito said the Winnachronicle had crossed the line of responsible reporting and that he had dealt with the problem privately. He also said he had pulled copies of the paper that normally would have been sent to middle schools in the cooperative school district.
The newspaper's faculty adviser defended the editors' decisions and said the February edition of the paper was intended to inform students, not shock people _ although they knew it would stir controversy.
"The kids wrote the articles and came up with the topic," said adviser Carol Downer. "They didn't go out to cause controversy, but the Winnachronicle is also not a P.R. piece for the high school. This is a place for students to express their view and talk about issues that are troubling the student body."

More Reaction later in the piece ....
Then there is this factoid.
The newspaper is not reviewed in advance of publication by administrators.
Freedom of the press eh? So is that intended to let the school administrators of the hook? :tongue2:

And then there's the Bong Hits for Jesus dust up.

Pity the poor public school system.

While I might agree with the first amendment rights of students, this kind of stuff, lack of any way to dismiss those who act out, mainstreaming, prayer, political correctness, and on and on only seems to drive more and more parents to private education. When they leave they take more than just their support. They take tax dollars, support for the school system and most important of all , they remove parents who give a damn about how the school is run.

It's not really a 1st amendment free press issue. The Supreme Court has already said that the school has the authority to censor speech in a school newspaper (link). This is really just a case of the school electing not to do so.
