A.P. pulls out of BCS next year

"other than a playoff nothing really works. in fact, even a playoff would be a tough sell. so we take teams 1 - 16 for the playoffs. and what if #17 has a better record than #14?"

Who the hell cares about No. 17? Or No. 9 if it was an eight-team format. And you're sitting there defending the BCS, which this season, has screwed the No. 3 team! And you're saying a playoff is no good because an even-lower team would get hosed? Get real man.

"as hated as it is, the only logical solution is the bcs or a system like it."

Um, no it's not. Look at every other level of football. Playoffs seem to work just fine.

And I'm sorry, the AP Poll will always be taken more seriously than the "SID/Asst Coaches Poll."

and what makes you think the pac 10 didnt do the same thing?

You honestly think the Pac 10 coaches would purposely vote so as to exclude one of their own schools from the BCS and in doing so, cost themselves over 1M per school?

After looking at the standings...a playoff using the D1-AA system would involve:

USC
Oklahoma
Michigan
Virginia Tech
Auburn
Pitt
Utah
Louisville
Boise State
Toledo
North Texas

then your at-large would probably be:

Cal
Texas
Georgia
Iowa
Miami

Fuck auto berths for conference champs. North Texas has no business being near a football stadium. Just use the current BCS system to pick the top 16 teams, and then seed them in a normal 16-team format (1 vs. 16, 2 vs. 15, etc.).

gottakeep strength of schedule...it makes for great big name games early in the year. with out we are gonna see the return of the 1-aa opponents. and for those who say well boise st/louisville/utah wah wah wah tell those bitches to come to the shoe get there asses kicked and collect there $1,100,000 and get some new turh (though i do kinda like thesmurf turf sometimes, but it can be hard to watch games with certain away teams with theri helmet colors) and if you wont go to cbus go to ann arbor/norman/maimi/gainseville/tallahasse/athens/so cal/austin yeah go play somebody out of conference and then bitch.

I would really like to see the Pre-Season polls go away. They are based on returning starting personnel, last season's results (sort of like reputation), and worst of all: reputation. I'm old enough to remember when polls didn't come out until a few games into the season (though I'm old enough to have forgotten when that was :wink2: ), and have always thought that system should return. I realize that many schools play weaker non-conference games at the start of the season, so their team strength may not be completely revealed. Of course, there are conferences out there where playing conference games may be considered the weakness. I just think the team should have to prove themselves on the field (what is), not before the season even starts (what might be). Anyways, this has no real ties to the original thread subject, but hey...I don't have that many posts and this seemed like a good place to throw my two cents worth in.

No doubt JWil.

'Course the character of the season changes with a playoff system.
Bad -- The do or die element on each game day is gone (as your goal is to make the bracket of 8 or 16).
Good -- A team's season isn't over with one (or more) losses. So a squad that got burned on the one day that the entire O-line had the flu still gets a chance to show their true colors.

Yes, but its like that in EVERY sport. I'm a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan. They were the best team this year. Did they win? No. That fluke-job curse-ridden bunch of idiots did. They just got hot at the end.

My point in bringing that up is this: A playoff doesn't end the specialness of the season. In fact, it might ENHANCE it.

Think about it. If there was a playoff and some sort of selection committee involved in the process, maybe schools would challenge themselves in non-con play and not play the Citadel, ala Auburn.

Look at VaTech. They might win an NCAA National Championship in football this season because they're arguably the hottest team out there right now. And what's wrong with that? Yeah, they're 10-2, but they might be better than OU or Auburn. Wouldn't it be fun to find out???

Basically, we're all hypocrites. We crave the Madness in March, but then don't wanna hurt our teams chances of a MNC, because we know if we go undefeated we'll be at the top becuase of our power conference standing.

But come on... how can anyone defend the "the regular season is too special" line when EVERY OTHER SPORT ON THE PLANET HAS A PLAYOFF.

Think about that. The NHL playoffs are awesome. Better than the regular season. And with a playoff, we'd be guaranteed some crazy-awesome matchups.
