A Fun Hypothetical.....

I've been reading my history of college football and came across the days of John Heisman. When he played it was "iron man" football. You played both ways even with substitues on the bench. Sometimes players would fake an injury to catch a breather on the sidelines according to Heisman.

I would like to see what our best "Iron Man" starting line-up would like and where would you put the players on offense defense. Remember, you can only use 11 players total.

Mine would look something like this:

QB/S Troy Smith
RB/LB Chris Wells
WR/S Malcolm Jenkins
WR/CB Teddy Ginn
WR/CB Anthony Gonzalez
FB/TE/LB Stan White
T/DT Alex Boone
T/DT Kirk Barton
C/DE Quinn Pitcock
G/DE Vernon Gholston
G/LB James Laurinitis

You'd move Jenkins to safety? I think I'd move Gonzalez to safety and keep Jenkins at cornerback. I'd have a tough time moving him. I guess the only reason I could see to move Jenkins is because Smith would likely play free safety. And Ginn - of course he's playing cornerback. That leaves Jenkins, a kick-ass cornerback, and Gonzalez to play cornerback and strong safety. Jenkins, we know, can play defense. So which is more important: a kick-ass shut-down corner or a solid strong safety? So you might be right.

I think I might take Stan White out of your line-up and move Laurinaitis to FB/TE. Then, maybe move Vernon Gholston to linebacker, and add Jay Richardson to DE/G. Confused?

Here's how I might try it:

FB/TE/LB James Laurinaitis
T/DT Alex Boone
T/DT Kirk Barton
C/DE Quinn Pitcock
G/DE Jay Richardson
G/LB Vernon Gholston

I think your weakness was with Laurinaitis at guard. My weakness will be with Gholston at linebacker.

Also, with iron-man football, I think that turnovers are much more costly. I'd have to think long and hard about Wells at running back. Pittman has proven to be more consistant as a running back this year. I have more faith in his holding the ball. But I'd hate to see him take on a lead-blocking full-back if he's a linebacker.
