A Flutie Moment in the USC-ND game

Flutie's pass and Leinart's pass aren't even in the same galaxy...

I obviously didn't make my disclaimer plain enough. Comparing the passes, or even the plays is about as far beside the point as anything could possibly be.

What matters is what happens in the mind of the voters. My point is EXACTLY that the moments don't begin to compare, but because this happened at Notre Dame; it's going to be over-blown.

It's a prediction about how the media will behave. Not a comment about the pass, the play or the game.

I sincerely hope that you guys are right. I for one think that you're giving sportwriters (the largest pool of voters) W-A-Y too much credit for being rational.

I will never forget 1984, watching live as Doug Flutie 'stole' the Heisman Trophy from Keith Byars on a single play (Hail Flutie vs. Miami).

It just happened again. When Matt Leinart connected with his roommate for a 61-yd completion on 4th and 9, against no less an opponent than Notre Dame; he repeated Flutie's feat. When people are casting their Heisman votes, they will remember that play above all else. Leinart will join Archie as the 2nd 2-time winner. Dammit.

Note: When I say "no less...than Notre Dame", I'm saying that from a Heisman perspective. A performance against Notre Dame is given disproportionate significance even when they suck. This year, with an over-rated Irish squad still in the top-10; Leinart is in like Flynn.

Lets not get carried away. Leinart will finish 3rd this season behind Vince Young and Reggie Bush.
