A few observations after the SDSU game

It's hard to complain about a semi-blow out, but I still have some concerns about the offense.

Running Game

Simply put, Pittman is not a feature back. The OL blew open some huge holes, but Tony lacked the vision and explosion to take full advantage of the many opportunities to break some big plays. I'd like to see some more of Mo Wells, who is dangerous in open space. Haw showed some good power in limited action during garbage time. Smith is a great running QB, but see below....

Passing Game

Boy, do the Bucks need some work here.

First, Smith took off running way too early and way too often. Against a better defense, Smith will need to stay in the pocket and look for his second and third options. This is especially true because the OL did a tremendous job and provided Smith with a ton of time in the pocket to make his reads and find the open receivers.

Second, Smith made some terrible decisions, with a very poorly thrown INT, and two other passes that should have been intercepted. He also threw several low balls, a couple of which bounced into the receivers.

Third, not to put all of the blame on Smith, the receivers dropped several very catchable passes (including Hamby and Ginn, each of whom has developed a case of the dropsies this season). Even Holmes dropped one today.

Fourth, very few yards after the catch. Part of the problem is the receivers not breaking tackles, part is the QB not gettting the receivers the ball in stride, and part is the play calling not "stretching" the defense (see below).

Finally, there were no deep throws, again. I'd like to see a few, just to loosen up the defense so that the underneath routes (especially slants) will open up some more. Late last season, Ohio State killed teams with slant routes, especially to Ginn, who was able to operate in the open field with a head of steam.

Special Note - Smith's best play of the game was his tackle after the Schnittker fumble. The defender would have gone coast to coast without Troy's heads up play.

Addendum - no comment on Zwick's performance in mop-up time.

Overall Offense

The passing game is completely out of sync, and the running game is not strong enough to pound teams. The offense is especially disappointing in light of the fact that they are getting outstanding line play, both in the running game (huge holes) and the passing game (great protection).

Overall Defense

Except for the first play of the game, where everyone seemed to be asleep, the defense played a great game. Hawk, Carp, and especially Kudla were tough up front, and Schlegel had the play of the day when he defended the option perfectly, caused the fumble, then recovered it near the goal line (should have been a TD). Malcolm Jenkins played a nice game, with some passes defensed and good run support. Salley almost had a nice INT, and Youbouty displayed his typical tight coverage. Everyone on the D played well, especially Kudla, Schlegel, and Jenkins.

Special Teams

Huston and Trapasso are continuing the excellence in the kicking game. The return game was a plus, with Holmes having a couple of nice returns. The coverage game was fine. No problems with the special teams.

Penalties

Two more unsportsmanlike / late hit penalties today. That crap has to stop, and soon.

A Final Note

A win is a win is a win. Not pretty, but it counts. Bring on Iowa and the rest of the Big Ten.

Great analysis and spot on IMO. In all honesty, I don't see TS as very comfortable in the gun passing-wise. He seems to have zero grasp on timing that way...perhaps under center with his drop steps would help him develop that mental clock. No need to change the formation or anything...

Good points, all, LJB. Funny thing, this was a much uglier game than last week (imo), and yet I feel much better after this one than I did after that one. :) Odd how that 'W' makes all the difference.

Even though I hated the loss last week, I thought we played much better. I think offensively we played down to the level of SDSU. Troy looked better last week and made some nice throws. He looked very unsettled today and missed plenty of wide open receivers.

I think Pittman is a strong runner and I like the way he is not afraid to put his head down. Schnittker runs to straight up. Wells has some great quickness and I am excited about his future.

The play calling was very predictable and very unimaginative. O-line blocking was suspect at times.

Most of the penalites were stupid and hurt us as they did last week. They must stop and the team must become more disciplined.

The D was solid as always. Long live the D...

We need to learn how to kick teams asses like Michigan and Iowa did. I am tired of these types of games and get more nervous about these teams than I do a game like Texas.

Our defensive line played amazing today. Kudla, Pitcock, and Green all spent most of their time in the backfield. We held the SDSU offense to 3 first downs! The 80 yard play was the only thing that hurt us, our defense played amazing today as a whole. Jenkins made a great freshman debut. I cant think of one soft/sore spot on our whole defense right now, its easily one of the best in the nation.

Our offense is a different story though. The worst was Schnittker fumbling the ball on first down at the goal line, im sorry but that cannot happen. Smith might of been a little bit to quick to run the ball, but I think he had a good game, his passing could use some work though. Pittman had some nice runs, but hes inconsistent and needs to improve his vision. Maurice Wells showed great feet and speed when he got carries, and Haw impressed me in his limited time, even though it was in "garbage time." Roy Hall had a nice game recieving, and so did Holmes. Ginn had a couple drops today, along with Hamby, but I was glad as hell when he caught those passes today, I feel bad for the guy and cant imagine what he feels like now. The offensive line looked alright, they couldve blocked for the run better, and there seemed to be alot of shuffling early in the game, the pass protection was great though.

Huston had a great game, the drop-off from Nuge wont be as big as most expected.

It was a win and thats all that matters.

Here are my observations....

Running Game

We rushed for 176 yards today against an overmatched defensive front. We ran a variation of the same base play at least 5-8 times.....we needed to line up and run right at them but instead, tried to stretch plays and use the option. It wasn't very effective or pretty. Pittman averaged 3.2 yards a carry, not very good against this defense. The option was effective but Smith missed the pitch on several plays which would have gone for big gains. Nice to see Wells get some quality time and Haw made the field.

Grade: C (on the running of Troy Smith)

Passing Game

To put it simply.......it was pathetic. Where do you start? Usually you start with the protection and today the protection was there, where was the breakdown? Obviously, it starts with Troy Smith, he was 14-26, for 156 yards and 1 interception. Not exactly a great performance. Our longest pass attempt was 25-30 yards. Where is the vertical passing game?

The receivers made some nice catches of some poorly thrown passed by Smith but on several occasions, did not make the routine catch. Holmes was the leading receiver with 4 catches for 44 yards. Ginn only touched the ball 4 times from the line of scrimmage, he had a few passes poorly thrown to him and didn't exactly run crisp routes. One bright spot was the play of Roy Hall, 4 catches for 43 yards. Hamby got the monkey off his back which was great to see, 3 cathes for 19 yards. No touchdowns from this group, has to make you wonder...

Grade: D

Overall Offense

We have no identity on offense and no rythm. The play calling was there today but the execution was not. It was a struggle all day to say the least. At one point, our entire starting line (except for Mangold) was replace by the second string. We scored several touchdowns due to great field position. The one long drive we had (a 90 yard drive) ended at the 1 yard line with a fumble.

Grade: D

Overall Defense

Take away the first play and they played their usual lights out. Enough said. They dominated.

Grade: A- (Shutout gets you a A+)

Special Teams

Huston was solid again on kickoffs and connected on 2 field goals....who was Nuge? Return teams were very solid, great job by Holmes today.

Grade: B+

A Final Note

The hang over from the Texas game was evident. Our struggles on offense must not continue if we expect to challenge for the Big Ten title. Troy's stats are deceiving in the fact that he missed several reads and seemed to be more comfortable running the ball than passing. Several poor passes. The offensive line did not dominate like they were expected to. Bottom line is that we need to make drastic improvement on offense and it starts with Troy.

lets hope JT was holding back for the big ten if not those same five plays out of the spread are getting pretty used up and since, we only use 3 formations out of the spread and run the same five plays uh-oh !

Thank god smith is back LOL

Defense. 73 yards and 3 first downs allowed over a 59:50 period. Never sniffed our side of the field after the first play. WOW.

SDSU was averaging over 400 per game.

If we could only find some semblance of an offense..... Defense wins championships.

Oh. and 2:1 time of possession isn't too bad either.

One more edit: any question who gets the Tatum Hit of the Game?

agree on the observations. I feel the offense is the only thing holding the bucks back. Defense and special teams are among the best in the nation. I just can't understand why the offense is barely respectable with the talent they possess. I don't like seeing Smith run as much as he does when there is better talent within throwing range. I want to see the offense pretend they have to carry the team for a change.
