I have the same issue ... I would guess many people do.
The general thought is that there are some issues with the version of MySQL currently running. It's thought that some "white page" errors are being generated by this same issue. Clarity is planning on addressing this soon with an upgraded version of MySQL (along with a vBulletin software update). Hopefully that cures the problems. Til then, I don't think there are any drawbacks or potential worsening problems to be caused by this situation. You'll just see an incorrect number for the time being.
For anyone encountering "white page" errors, go to your UserCP and reduce the number of posts you view per page back down to 10 (from whatever number it was set at). You'll know a white page error when it happens ... all you'll see is ... you guessed it, a white page (blank).

There is a PM in your box that has code in it. I was showing an insane number one day, and I deleted a PM, and I was back to my actual count. I don't recall specifically what the issue was... It may have been something that was transfered from Excel, as I recall I was PMing with someone about the BP poll when it happened. Delete your mail, it goes away.
