If I recall they, they don't count against the individual players foul total in the NBA. That may be why you're confused. Or I could be completely wrong. I also thought they didn't count against a player's regular allotment of fouls.

class "a" technical is for being a jerk. two shots and opponent gets possession. team foul.

class "b" technical is for being dumb. one shot and possession stays as-is. no team foul.
