6/29/10 - 'Downtime' this morning/today for some

Clarity

Around 4am Jo went to let the dogs out and noticed the computer that has BP on a 5-minute monitoring reload showed an unable to connect message. She woke me up and I went through my normal steps (can I connect to other sites, can I ssh in to the box itself, can I connect through a proxy and/or my neighbor's ISP) and had no love with any of it.

Sometime around 5am, I was able to connect through Time Warner Road Runner (cable) and Opera Mobile's effective proxy, but was still unable to connect through UVerse and an AT&T mobile account. I connected to the machine and confirmed that it was running properly.

Fast forward to 11am or so this morning, and I can just now connect again through all the ISPs for which I have access (borrowed or otherwise). We *just* received an email from Puregig (the company that colocates our server and provides our bandwidth) that reads as follows:

Puregig said:
We are currently investigating service-impacting issues. At this time you may experience connectivity issues to certain destinations. We are sending this proactive announcement to keep you informed. We will provide an update as soon we have more information period.

My assumption (and it's just that), is that this morning issues are indeed what they're talking about (despite the use of the word 'proactive') and that one of their major connections/pipelines has been choking thus blocking some but not all of us from the site. When I was unable to connect to BP, I was similarly unable to connect to Puregig.net and Puregig.com, which seems to reinforce this assumption.

Either way, just wanted to post to let you know that: (a) it wasn't just you if you couldn't connect earlier today, (b) you're not crazy if you weren't able to connect and it seems like others were, (c) Puregig and I are aware of the problem (although one of us is impotent in terms of addressing it, I'll let you guess which), (d) given they addressed it as an ongoing issue, we could possibly see a little more of it.

As I said, at the time of this post I can connect through all ISPs. Doesn't mean everyone out there has connectivity again, but hopefully it means that we're nearly past this.

For our conspiracy mock theorist friends, this was not a planned outage to spur the drive. That's not until 2 minutes into the Miami game. (I am, of course, just kidding.)

Sorry for the issues this morning. Take some comfort in the image of me sitting here banging my head against the desk hoping that sacrifice of flesh would appease the angry internet gods.

From Puregig:

We continue to work with Global Crossing on this issue. At this time we have routed around the issue. Please let us know if your experiencing any problems.

Sounds like they've identified and circumvented the problem. Hopefully we're done with this one.
