#5 Ohio State 59, Northwestern 50 (Final)

I think games like this on the road help you out more than a blow out win, so when they are faced with some adversity they know how to deal with it.

I love this team, b/c if one or two guys are struggling other guys can step up and we have a guy that can distribute the ball to the guys that are hot...

Oden is such a beast and by the tourney I don't see anyone that will be able to stop him 1 on 1...

Also suprised not to see Hunter much tonite...

I didn't see the game, but I am a bit surprised by some of the negativity.

  • Wisconsin won at Northwestern 56-50 and a lot of people think Wisconsin should be ranked #1.
  • Wisconsin led 52-50 with less than a minute left.
  • Northwestern jumped out to a 13-9 lead on Wisconsin.
  • The computers had Ohio State down as an eight point favorite in this game; we won by 9.
  • Last time we played Northwestern, they played without a leading player and played them immediately after the heartbreaker against Wisconsin.
I didn't see the game and I defer to the opinions of those of you who did, but my overwhelming thought is that we probably came in thinking we'd mop the floor with them and discovered very quickly why they had played Wisconsin so tough. After we dropped the zone and manned up on them, they discovered why we are going to be in the Final Four.

Bring on Michigan State, which will be our toughest game for the rest of the year prior to the Big Ten Championship and NCAA, in my opinion.

Oden's 17 points, 17 boards lift OSU past Northwestern

Freshman scores 10 points in final 10 minutes in Buckeyes' 59-50 victory.

By the Associated Press

Thursday, January 25, 2007

EVANSTON, Ill. ? Freshman Greg Oden had 17 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, and No. 5 Ohio State hung on to beat Northwestern 59-50 on Wednesday night.
Oden scored 10 points over the final 10:19, after Northwestern's Tim Doyle hit back-to-back baskets to pull the Wildcats within 39-38. Oden's 17 boards were one more than his previous high, and the Buckeyes outrebounded Northwestern 39-19.

NU can’t stop Oden

EVANSTON – Even when the game ended, after the Northwestern players had finally left him alone, Ohio State’s Greg Oden still was surrounded by people.

On the way to the locker room, after he collected 17 points and 17 rebounds as No. 5 Ohio State held off feisty NU for a 59-50 victory over the Wildcats, Oden was mobbed by fans in the hallway. Some held out pens for autographs, some, rather aggressively, tapped his shoulder, wanting to simply touch the player who might well be the No. 1 pick in the next NBA draft.

Later, almost 40 minutes after his rebounding show down the stretch – Oden’s 17 boards were two fewer than the Wildcats posted as a team – dashed NU’s latest hopes for an upset, the Ohio State freshman walked through a nearly empty Welsh-Ryan Arena surrounded by six uniformed police officers.

College Basketball: No. 5 Ohio State 59, Northwestern 50
Northwestern can't cushion Oden's blows

January 25, 2007
By Tim Cronin Staff writer
Everything was going Northwestern's way in the early minutes of Wednesday night's contest against Ohio State. Greg Moore, Vince Scott and Sterling Williams were hitting 3-pointers, racing NU to a nine-point lead and forcing the fifth-ranked Buckeyes out of their 3-2 zone.
Then what often happens at Welsh-Ryan Arena happened again. Northwestern stopped making baskets. And not 3-pointers, either.
"We missed three layups in four possessions," Wildcats head coach Bill Carmody said. "You know they're going to make a run. You want as big a cushion as you can get."

Better The 2nd Time Around

Abe Rakov

By Abe Rakov
The Daily Northwestern

Well at this rate if Northwestern draws Ohio State at some point in the Big Ten tournament the Wildcats should win.

The Cats fell to the No. 5 Buckeyes 59-50 just a week after getting drubbed by 32 in Columbus, Ohio. NU always plays much better at home, but Welsh-Ryan Arena shouldn't get too much credit for the Cats losing by 23 fewer points.

While NU showed a lot of improvement this time around, Ohio State didn't help it's own cause by shooting 27 percent from 3-point range and committing 14 turnovers. And there's the fact that the Buckeyes ignored their future NBA star Greg Oden much of the game.

Senior Tim Doyle led NU with 15 points. He also dished three assists and had two steals in 40 minutes as the Cats lost to No. 5 Ohio State 59-50 Wednesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

For the third-straight home game, Northwestern had a chance to knock off a Big Ten power. But for the third-straight home game, the Wildcats could not find the points they needed in the finals minutes and wound up with the loss.

Led by a 17-point, 17-rebound performance from freshman Greg Oden, Ohio State pulled away late to defeat NU 59-50 Wednesday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Williams Solid In First Game Off Bench (Men's Basketball)

By Andrew Simon
The Daily Northwestern

Coming off the bench in Northwestern's loss to No. 5 Ohio State on Wednesday, Sterling Williams finally played like a starter.

The redshirt sophomore forward didn't appear in the starting lineup for the first time this season, but that didn't stop him from matching his season high of 11 points. He last scored that many in NU's season-opener against Cornell.

"Sterling made a few shots, but he also got some offensive rebounds, and he seemed pretty active in there," coach Bill Carmody said. "Maybe (not starting) shook him up a little bit."

It's been a bumpy campaign for Williams, who showed flashes of potential last season, while starting 13 times in 29 games and averaging 3.2 points per contest. This season his athleticism and shooting ability were supposed to propel him into a key role in the offense.

Buckeyes hold off Wildcats

Thursday, January 25, 2007
From wire reports
Evanston, Ill.- Greg Oden wanted to create opportunities, and his surgically repaired wrist wasn't going to stop the freshman. Neither was Northwestern.
Oden had 17 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, and No. 5 Ohio State hung on to beat Northwestern, 59-50, on Wednesday night.
"It was a close game," he said. "Somebody had to make plays."

Cats can't climb Mt. Oden
NU hangs tough, but Buckeyes star too much in end OSU 59, NORTHWESTERN 50

January 25, 2007
BY LACY J. BANKS Staff Reporter
Ohio State basketball publicist Dan Wallenberg spelled out a simple rule before the Buckeyes' 59-50 victory against Northwestern about whether 7-foot freshman sensation Greg Oden would speak with reporters afterward. ''If he has a good game, he'll talk to the media,'' Wallenberg said. ''If he doesn't, he won't.''
For three-quarters of the game Wednesday before a capacity crowd of 6,646 at Welsh-Ryan Arena, it looked as though there would be no postgame interviews with Oden.
