#4 Ohio State 82, San Francisco 60 (Final)

Cook, Lighty, Butler, Hunter and Conley in.

Butler a 3 with the assist to Conley. Trading 3 pointers now. 78-60 with 2:10 left. Very nice move for Lighty. I want to see more of that mid range jumper off the drive.

Conley now gets a block to start the fast break. Is there anything that this kid doesn't do? Cook at the line for 2 shots. Hit the first.

Butler and Conley out for the two walk-ons now.

Aww man. They got each one of the walkons a shot in the last 30 seconds with near misses. I love the recognition and the way they always play team basketball. Game over. Bucks win!

5 and 0. A big test is looming next week but I think we will be ready.

Armando Surratt scored 15 points and Antonio Kellogg and Manny Quezada had 11 apiece for the Dons (2-2). Jay Watkins added 10 rebounds.

The loudest roar of the night came midway through the second half on Butler's crisp alley-oop pass from near midcourt that Cook controlled with one hand over defender Jesse Byrd for a dunk that put the Buckeyes ahead 54-38.

Conley controlled the tempo in the first half by setting up his teammates for easy baskets. In addition, he did some scoring on his own as the Buckeyes solidified their lead.

After Quezada broke the 10-0 run with a short pull-up jumper, Cook scored on a drive and Conley assisted on a wraparound pass for Matt Terwilliger's layup.

Conley had 10 points and five assists at the break.

Ohio State maintained a double-digit lead before turning the game into a rout with a 22-3 run midway through the second half.

The Buckeyes acquitted themselves inside despite the continuing absence of Oden, their prized 7-0 recruit. Still recovering from surgery to reattach a ligament in his right wrist this summer, Oden is not expected to start playing for several more weeks. He is practicing with the team while wearing a brace on his wrist.

Conley, Cook lift OSU to 5-0

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Tuesday, November 21, 2006
COLUMBUS ? Mike Conley Jr. isn't just the "other" guy who played with 7-footer Greg Oden in high school.
The 6-foot-1 guard wasn't overlooked at Indianapolis Lawrence North ? he was a McDonald's All-American ? but playing with the two-time national player of the year means second billing.

With Oden out recovering from a wrist injury, Buckeye fans saw some more of Conley's repertoire during Monday night's 82-60 win over San Francisco.
"I think it's more of running the offense and taking whatever is given," Conley said. "I just put up the shots that I felt comfortable taking."
Conley had 12 points, nine assists and six rebounds against only two turnovers. His points came on pick-and-rolls and backdoor cuts as the No. 4-ranked Buckeyes improved to 5-0.
Key play
Daequan Cook threw down an alley-oop dunk from Jamar Butler during a 22-3 run for a 71-41 lead. That shot over a San Francisco defender ? sandwiched around two Cook treys ? fired up the 14,592 at the Schottenstein Center. Cook finished with a game-high 20 points and five rebounds.
Key players
Several guys had big games, led by Conley, Cook, Ron Lewis (15 points) Othello Hunter (nine points, 10 rebounds) and David Lighty (eight points, eight rebounds). Armando Surratt (15 points) led San Francisco (2-2).
Key stats
OSU had 19 offensive rebounds and won the overall board battle 46-31. OSU had 20 assists against six turnovers.
Quote
"I don't think he cares if he scores or doesn't score," OSU coach Thad Matta said of Conley. "He's got a great head on his shoulders for as young as he is."
Buckeye Five
Five things we know about OSU basketball through five games:
? With 7-foot freshman Greg Oden out until possibly January, the Buckeyes have quick, 3-point shooting wings who can play small ball with anyone.
? Freshman Mike Conley Jr. and junior Jamar Butler give OSU a fantastic 1-2 punch at point guard.
? Freshman Daequan Cook is averaging 18 points per game off the bench, while senior Ron Lewis averages 17.2.
? Freshman David Lighty is one of OSU's best defenders, as is juco-transfer junior Othello Hunter.
? Foul trouble and interior defense and rebounding could be problems against top-tier teams, at least until Oden returns.

Undefeated OSU outplays S.F. 82-80
Tuesday, November 21, 2006
By RUSTY MILLER AP Sports Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Many teams have trouble finding a quality point guard. No. 4 Ohio State starts two of them.
The tandem of Mike Conley Jr. and Jamar Butler combined for 16 assists with only two turnovers, and Daequan Cook scored 20 points to lead the Buckeyes past San Francisco 82-60 on Monday night.

"It's an advantage for us to have two guys out there capable of making plays," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said, referring to his guards.

The Buckeyes (5-0) have a lot more than two.

Cook shot 8-of-11 from the field to match his average for points. Ron Lewis added 15 points and Conley scored 12.

Conley, a freshman, added nine assists and six rebounds with two turnovers. He now has 33 assists and 12 turnovers this season while directing the Buckeyes' offense. His partner in the backcourt, Butler, had seven assists without a turnover. Othello Hunter added nine points and 10 rebounds.

San Francisco coach Jessie Evans looked at a stat sheet that showed his team was outrebounded 46-31 and shook his head. The Buckeyes dominated even without 7-foot recruit Greg Oden, who will be sidelined for another few weeks while he recovers from wrist surgery.

"They've still got another guy to add. He may mess up their chemistry," Evans joked.

In other games involving ranked teams, it was: No. 5 UCLA 88, Chaminade 63; No. 8 Alabama 63, Xavier 56; No. 9 Duke 71, Air Force 56; No. 12 Memphis 77, Oklahoma 65; No. 13 Marquette 87, Texas Tech 72; No. 19 Georgia Tech 79, Purdue 61; No. 20 Kentucky 87, DePaul 81; No. 25 Maryland 71, Winthrop 60.

"That's what I was doing, just getting the crowd going," Cook said.

Conley controlled the tempo in the first half by setting up his teammates for easy baskets. In addition, he did some scoring on his own as the Buckeyes solidified their lead.

"It was more running the offense and taking whatever they give me at the time," said Conley, the son of the 1992 U.S. Olympic gold medalist in the triple jump. "I try to get the shots I am comfortable taking."

Ohio State maintained a double-digit lead before turning the game into a rout with a 22-3 run midway through the second half.

The Buckeyes play No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 29 in Chapel Hill _ their first real test of the season.

"That's going to be a challenge," Butler said. "But if we keep playing within our system I think we'll be fine."
