#4 Ohio State 80, Findlay 57 (Final)

Hunter looked realllllllly good tonight. I wouldnt be suprised if he overtakes Twig by the middle of non-conference season. He has a defensive presence and likes to board. Twig seemed to float out on the perimeter too much tonight, we already have enough of those guys.

Conley looked quicker then advertised. His shot was a little off, but he looks like he might be the point guard to run our offense with Butler at the 2.

Cook and Lighty looked great. Cook showed all the ways he could score tonight, and Lighty looks like a good one on both ends of the court.

We are going to have a hard time winning games without a guy in the middle (until Oden comes back) if we dont lock up on defense.

Overall, it looked like it was the first game these guys have played in. The freshmen looked good as advertised, and Hunter a little better. Matta will have them running on all cylinders by conference season.

The thing that leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth is the bad defense. I think that will be corrected, but it needs to be corrected fast.

Butler - Didnt try to assert himself at all and he only took 2 shots. No big deal he will be there when the season starts.

Conley - Nice to see him get the start. He played a great all around game like a pg should. Will be nice to move Butler to the 2 g at times. Much like the combo of Butler/Foster from last year. Overall I was really impressed with his defense and his ability to get to the rack.

Lewis - He seemed to take charge early and he is going to lead the team in terms of leadership. I look for him to take lots of shots and will probably be our leading scorer early in the season.

Twig - He was playing non-chalant D at times, but it is exhbition, so I am hoping that is corrected by season start. He did knock down a 3 and is not scared to pop an open jumper when open. He is out of position at the 5, but has to man it until Oden gets back.

Harris - He is still the same Ivan and probably always will be. We will see more flashes of better play from him this year being that he is a senior, but I wouldnt be suprised to see his minutes diminsh when Oden comes back and they let Twig play some at the 4. He needs to hang in there and lead the team with leadership tho.

Cook - OMG is this kid smooth on the court. He has the makings of a lottery pick in the NBA. His shot has improved dramatically and his ability to get to the rack is great. I am saying now that he has at least 2 if not more 25+ pt games on the season.

Lighty - Man I was impressed with how big he has gotten. He arms are huge. The kid has obviously been eatin' the weights. I watched him shot a couple hours b4 the game in the gym by himself and his shot is adequate, but at this point I don't look for him to be a guy that will take a lot of 3's. More the 15-18 ft. jumper and take the ball to the rack. He is a good rebounder and played strong D.

Hunter - He was also very impressive. He might be too weak at times, but he can get away with that with his athleticism. He had two awesome dunks and a couple nice blocks. Overall I think that he might take quite a bit of pt away from Harris.

The only thing I worry about right now is the fact that we don't have any inside presence on D, besides maybe Hunter and his ability to block some shots.

We are going to be gunning it up from deep a whole heck of a lot this season and will try and run and outscore teams.

When Oden comes back this team is going to be very good, but until then I think about 15 in the country is about where we should be.

We are also going to make some stupid plays just due to age, but as the season progresses we will be fine.

Right now I predict only a 1 or 2 loss big ten season if Oden is healthy...

After seeing the box score, some stats that struck me:

Hunter - 5 of 7 shooting, 4 fouls, 2 blocks
Cook - 13 points, 8 rebounds (7-D, 1-O)
Lighty - 4 of 4 from the line, 2 steals
Butler - 1 of 3 shooting, 3 assists to 4 turnovers (4 TO's? Very unButler-like)
Conley - 7 assists, 1 turnover (Very Butler-like)
Twiggy - 4 of 8 shooting, 0 turnovers
Lewis - 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting, 3-6 from behind the arc, 2 BLOCKS, 3 steals
Harris - 3 points, 3 fouls
Payne - 3 points in 2 minutes (yeah Sam!)

Rebounds are scarce in OSU basketball win

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Thursday, November 02, 2006

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta knew the question was imminent.
The Buckeyes were outrebounded 39-30 by NCAA Division II Findlay during Wednesday's 80-57 exhibition win. The Oilers also grabbed 17 offensive rebounds to Ohio State's 8 at the Schottenstein Center.
"I've got an answer coming," Matta said in reference to 7-foot freshman center Greg Oden, who is probably out until January with a wrist injury.
"We weren't seeing things before they happen. When you're out there with your back to the basket, and you can see eight other guys on the court, you've got to have more awareness. ... We've got to continue to harp on that. This is a team last year I think we outrebounded 44-29. That has to be more important to us."
Troy's 6-8 center Matt Terwilliger had 9 points, 4 rebounds and a block in 28 minutes. Fellow junior and 6-9 post player Othello Hunter added 11 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks in 19 minutes.
"I wanted the big guys to have over seven rebounds," Matta said. "I wanted more activity down there and defensively."
With just 21 practices, Matta said the offensive sets were vanilla. But defense and rebounding doesn't need a playbook.
"I had a lot of questions in my mind answered," Matta said. "We did some good things. We did some really bad things.
"On the defensive standpoint, we weren't as tough and resilient as we needed to be off the ball."
New guys: Yeah, these freshmen could be pretty good. Senior captain Ron Lewis led the team with 17 points, but all four freshmen scored at least 9 points.
Mike Conley showed his quickness and court awareness, scoring 10 points and adding 7 assists against just one turnover.
Matta praised David Lighty for his defense. Lighty also had 9 points and 2 steals. Daequan Cook scored 13 points with a game-high 8 rebounds.
The team's best stretches seemed to be when the freshman were on the court with Lewis or co-captain Jamar Butler.
Etc.: Ohio State and Findlay ? a highly ranked NCAA Division II team ? each had 34 points in the paint. OSU ran more, outscoring Findlay 24-8 off turnovers and 10-4 on the break. Oden and transfer Kyle Madsen watched from the bench. Oden helped the cheerleaders spell out O-H-I-O and wore a scarlet wrist guard. The starters were Ivan Harris, Terwilliger, Conley, Lewis and Butler, but the staff used multiple combinations.
Recruiting: Toledo Libbey junior William Buford has verbally committed to Ohio State. Buford averaged 22 points and was a Division I second-team All-Ohioan. The 6-foot-5 guard/forward can't sign a letter of national intent until November 2007. He would be the third player in OSU's 2008 recruiting class, joining guard Walter Offutt (Indianapolis) and center B.J. Mullens (Canal Winchester).

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Buckeyes' possibilities nothing but positive

Thursday, November 02, 2006

Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus- Greg Oden worked on his left hand Wednesday night.
When Ohio State teammate Ron Lewis swatted a shot out of bounds in the first half of the Buckeyes' exhibition opener, the 7-footer used his healthy appendage to grab the basketball on one bounce. His right hand held a water bottle, a red brace over the cast on his surgically repaired right wrist.
Wearing tan pants and a brown sweater, the freshman who has already drawn comparisons to Magic Johnson and Bill Walton, stood and shouted encouragement to his teammates. And then his highlight ended and Ohio State's hole in the middle was obvious.
Ohio State's 80-57 victory over Division II Findlay in the first of two exhibition games before the season-opener in eight days served as the unveiling of the new-look Buckeyes.
The look included freshman point guard Mike Conley (10 points, seven assists, one turnover in 31 minutes), freshman forward Daequan Cook (13 points, eight rebounds in 21 minutes), freshman forward David Lighty (9 points, two steals in 24 minutes) and junior-college transfer Othello Hunter (11 points, four rebounds in 19 minutes). But it won't include Oden for about another two months, though that may feel more like two years to coach Thad Matta after Wednesday.
"I got an answer coming," Matta said with a smile when asked about the Buckeyes' lack of presence inside.
Right now there are issues, with 6-8 junior Matt Terwilliger and 6-7 senior Ivan Harris the only experienced size. Defense is the focus as well, while Matta estimates only 15 percent of the offensive playbook has been implemented in the 21 practices so far.
Matta is still experimenting with combinations, but the starting lineup included Terwilliger, Harris and Lewis (game-high 17 points) in the frontcourt, junior Jamar Butler (5 points, four turnovers) at shooting guard and Conley at point guard. Butler played the point last year, but it's clear he and Conley will be sharing the court a lot and Conley will be bringing the ball up when they do.
"All we did was take it up a notch," Cook said. "We saw the team wasn't giving 100 percent, and we knew if we didn't give 100 percent, we'd be on the bench."
Now they just need Oden to get off that bench, too.

Buckeyes' freshmen, minus Oden, debut in win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State's vaunted recruiting class, minus top center Greg Oden, made its debut in an 80-57 exhibition victory over Findlay on Wednesday night.

The 7-foot Oden, still healing from surgery on his right wrist, watched the game from the sideline but three other members of the class -- dubbed the "Thad Five" for Buckeyes coach Thad Matta -- scored in double figures. Daequan Cook had 13 points, junior-college transfer Othello Hunter had 11 and Mike Conley added 10 points and seven assists.

David Lighty, the fifth member of the highly rated class, finished with nine and Cook also had eight rebounds.

Frank Phillips scored 14 points for NCAA Division II Findlay.

OSU newcomers raise energy level
Injured Oden watches exhibition from bench

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State center Matt Terwilliger shoots against Findlay?s Aaron Laflin in the first half in Value City Arena. Terwilliger finished with nine points.
On the bright side, seven blocked shots by five players and eight steals by five heralded a new era of heightened athleticism in the Ohio State men?s basketball program.
On the dim side ? Greg Oden, get well soon.
OSU shot 50 percent from the field and scored 24 points off turnovers in an 80-57 win over Findlay last night in the exhibition opener for each team in Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes also gave up 17 offensive rebounds and were outrebounded 39-30 by the NCAA Division II Oilers. In an exhibition game a year ago between the teams, Ohio State dominated the boards 44-25.
"I?ve got an answer coming," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said.
Unfortunately for OSU, no one knows how soon. Last night, the answer ? the 7-foot Oden, national high school player of the year the past two seasons ? sat on the bench in street clothes, a scarlet brace encasing his surgically repaired right wrist, while the rest of his "Thad Five" recruiting class made their debut before an announced crowd of 14,173.
Freshman guard Mike Conley Jr., Oden?s high school teammate the past four years in Indianapolis, said he doesn?t know when his college roommate will be back. Oden was not available for comment.
"We?re hoping he comes back soon, but when he comes back, we want him to be 100 percent," Conley said. "We don?t want to rush him. We want to make sure he comes back ready to help the team.
"He doesn?t really have a goal (of returning for a particular game). He wants to be back for the team, not to play a certain team. He wants to be back to help us all."
Senior Ron Lewis led the Buckeyes with 17 points and had three of their 10 three-point baskets, three steals and two blocked shots. Freshman Daequan Cook had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds from the wing. Junior-college transfer Othello Hunter had 11 points and two blocked shots. Conley had 10 points and seven assists.
Frank Phillips led Findlay with 14 points and nine rebounds.
"We did some good things," Matta said, "and we did some real bad things.
"From a defensive standpoint, we weren?t as tough and as resilient as we need to be off the ball. ? I wanted a big guy to have over seven rebounds (Hunter and center Matt Terwilliger had four apiece). I wanted more activity down there. Our communication defensively ? I couldn?t hear us talking at all. When you?re young, you better do that."
Conley was the only one of the newcomers in the starting lineup, joining Lewis, Terwilliger, Jamar Butler and Ivan Harris. That five was content to shoot threes, however, gave up 10 points in seven possessions and fell behind by a point four minutes into the game.
In came Cook, Hunter and freshman David Lighty, and with Conley and Butler, they forced three turnovers, blocked a shot (Hunter) and scored on a rebound putback (Hunter) in the next four minutes. That fired a 10-0 run that gave the Buckeyes a nine-point cushion they played with until halftime, when they led 43-33.
"You could see there wasn?t as much intensity and hard work (as there needed to be at the outset)," Cook said. "We thought about what we needed to do when we got out there and took it up another notch and just played hard. We knew if we didn?t give 100 percent we were going to be over there on the bench, so we just stepped it up another notch."
Hunter, Cook and Conley scored all the points in a 9-0 run in the first eight minutes of the second half as the Buckeyes expanded their lead to 62-43, and that was that.
"It felt good all of us being together and finally being a team," Cook said. "Now it?s just time to work."
