31 HOURS OF NON-STOP DRINKING
By Stuart Patterson

HOGMANAY revellers are being urged to join in a 31-hour drinking marathon at a nightclub.

The bevvy session will last from 6pm on Hogmanay to 1.30am on January 2.
Boozers will be encouraged to drink cheap shots around the clock and prizes will be handed out for those who can stay standing throughout the promotion.

Last night, nightclub bosses were condemned by politicians and anti-alcohol campaigners who accused them of encouraging binge drinking.
Details of the event, at the Cube nightclub in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, were revealed after a study found nearly 40 people are drinking themselves to death in Scotland every week.

The 31-hour drinking binge will be held in the 300-capacity nightclub thanks to a special licence.

Tickets cost £15 but clubbers can pay an extra £25 and be treated to a VIP bar, which means they do not have to queue.

Barmen will pour free champagne, and those inside can rack up cheap rounds thanks to the cut-price drinks promotions on offer to everyone.
Clubbers will get wristbands so they can go home for a sleep, then come back and "top-up" with more booze.

A barbecue will take place in the venue's beer garden, and prizes will be handed out after numerous competitions.

Those who stay on their feet and drink for the entire 31 hours are expected to be handed DVD players.

Local councillor Sam Coull said: "This is ridiculous. I can't believe it's been allowed to happen.

"It sounds like some kind of grand binge from the days of ancient Rome, where the last man standing is awarded for his efforts.

"There will be a lot of misery among the people who feel ill as a result of their binge. They won't be having a happy New Year."

Club bosses say bouncers will send home anyone who is worse for wear, but anti-booze campaigners are angry.

Jack Law, chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland, said: "This is bound to result in drunkenness, with police and accident and emergency departments left to deal with the consequences of illness, disorder, accidents and crime.

"This is not an example of the responsible practice we want to see in the licensed trade."

The Cube's manager Chris Brown defended the event last night.
He said: "It's a one-off because this is the only time of year we can get such a special licence.

"All we want to do is give people a brilliant New Year party and help them to enjoy themselves as much as possible."

Deaths Statistics show nearly 40 people drink themselves to death in Scotland every week - a 250 per cent rise in booze-related deaths in the last 25 years.

The SNP's health spokeswoman, Shona Robison, said: "This is extremely irresponsible.

"It shows the folly of extended drinking hours, which the Scottish Executive have supported.

"A club should not be promoting itself in this way. Everybody wants to have a good time over the festive season but this is going too far.

"It plays to our binge drinking culture and is not the kind of thing we want to see."

My kinda contest here...are FKA and SIMV up for the challenge?

Well, I'll take the liberty of speaking for FKA - sign us up! (Though it may be a problem that it's in Scotland rather than Ireland... Oh, hell with it, I suppose we can hate the English either way.)

Oh, and we'll drink SIMV under the table.

Edit - ok, that doesn't sound right, and I know where you perverts will go with that... You know what I meant!

Idiom: drink someone under the table
  • To continue drinking and remain sober (or comparatively so) after one's companion has completely collapsed.
