THREE men allegedly stole an elderly woman's wheelchair so they could get a free ride to their next drinking hole.

The trio, aged 23, 31 and 32, allegedly rode the wheelchair 250m down George St in The Rocks to The Establishment hotel, before abandoning it for a few drinks about 8pm on Saturday.

The selfish act left an English tourist, in her 70s, marooned in the Amaroma restaurant.

"It's a fairly ordinary performance," Inspector Terry Gilchrist said.

"An elderly woman was stuck for about an hour. She can get around but not terribly far and luckily she had relatives with her," he said.

The three men have been charged with larceny.
