Darryn Peterson essentially had a basketball in his hand as soon as he could walk. By the tail end of elementary school, it was clear his talent could take him places. Now, as he begins his freshman year of high school basketball, the hard work is paying off with a national recruitment that only figures to intensify.

Peterson’s offer list increased by one late last week when Ohio State made him the first member of the 2025 recruiting class to receive a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes.

“We’ve been talking to Kentucky and some other places, but this means more to him than anything because he’s an Ohio kid,” his father, Darryl, told The Dispatch. “He almost felt at one point like the big places are reaching out, when’s Ohio State coming in? All of a sudden, Ohio State came. He’s an Ohio kid, and he always had dreams about playing at Akron U. because I played there but I tell him, ‘Hey, forget about Akron. 5-star Darryn Peterson updates his recruitment

Darryn Peterson is the No. 4 player in the 2025 On3 50. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 14.0 points with 5.0 rebounds and nearly two assists per game in July on Nike’s EYBL Circuit. He is coming off a 22-point performance at the Flyin’ to the Hoop.

“I’m an all-around guard; I can facilitate and score,” Peterson told On3. “I’ve improved my body a lot this season. I’ve been watching a lot of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, really their aggressive mentality.”

On3 caught up with Darryn Peterson after a recent live viewing to talk about his recruitment.

Peterson talks schools

“I’ve taken unofficial visits to Michigan and Ohio State,” Peterson said. “We’re working on getting an unofficial visit to Kentucky soon.”

Michigan: “I watch Jordan Poole. They showed me a lot of his highlights when I was there, and I saw how they ran their offense around him. They use a lot of handoffs and ball screens, and I am comfortable playing like that.”

Ohio State: “I’m a big fan; that’s my hometown. I saw Malaki Branham get to the NBA from there last year and how they used him. He and I are close. They feature their guards.”

Kentucky: “They get one-and-dones and build them and develop them. I’m trying to do one year of college and get to the NBA.”

The No. 2 overall prospect in the 2025 class, Darryn Peterson (No. 1 shooting guard) included Ohio State in his top 16 schools on Saturday.


When the 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard received an offer from Ohio State in August 2021, it was a moment he won't forget.

“I was excited as ever because that’s my hometown. So I loved that one,” Peterson told Eleven Warriors. “And I knew some people there; Malaki Branham, Meechie (Johnson), I knew those guys. So those were big homies for me. … (The coaches) talk to my dad more than me. The relationship’s there. I love those guys.”

A top target for Ohio State in 2025, Chris Holtmann and three of his assistant coaches were all present to watch the No. 2 overall player in the 2025 class play at the Adidas 3SSB event in Rock Hill, South Carolina in June.

In two seasons at CVCA, Peterson earned Division II All-Ohio and All-Northeast Inland District honors for both seasons, including being named the PAC-7 and Division II Northeast Inland District Player of the Year and a finalist for the Ohio Mr. Basketball Award.

This summer, Peterson helped lead the United States Under 16 boys basketball team to a gold medal at the FIBA Americas championship.

Prior to transferring to Huntington Prep (West Virginia) from Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy this summer, Peterson's .9995 247Sports' composite rating would have made him the second-best Ohio prospect in the modern recruiting era, behind only LeBron James (1.000 in 2003).

At Huntington Prep. Peterson will team up with 2024 four-star forward Jordan McCullum and three-star forward Dillon Tingler.
