I've always liked them
So the favorite shows thread reminded that the new season of 24 is coming up. I've been meaning to check this show out for the past couple of years. Should I just start watching the show in January when it comes back on or to get it would I need to catch up by watching the DVDs?

I would suggest watching it from the first season, because there are a lot of characters that come and go through out the seasons. People always pop up that have some sort of stories to them.. good and bad. BUT, you would be able to start watching it this season and have no problem knowing whats going on... because each season has it's own problems.

Agreed. Rent or buy season 1 and follow it through.

Bonus: as you are catching up, you won't have one damn commercial to worry about.

Consumer alert: if the show takes, you WILL have many late night sessions watching it with little or no sleep. It is addictive.

BKB and I rented each and every episode starting with season 1 this fall, I found it to be more addictive than heroin...

Definitely go back and watch them all -- so much of what happens is based on the power dynamics between these characters that have been developing for years, and all the great characters who aren't around anymore, and in particular you can see how Jack got to be who he is now. He was very different way back in Day 1 -- and Day 3... just, wow.

When did you have a heroin addiction?

Tink... tink

***********SPOILER ALERT**************

Ryn just wanted to experience things from Jack's POV. She's also killed a few people. Maybe she is taking things a bit too far. Wait, I just heard a noise downstairs. I'm going to go check it out and then I'll come back and tell you the real big secret I learned.
