COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State baseball team suffered a 5-2 loss at No. 24 Nebraska Friday afternoon at Hawks Field. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 24-10 overall and 7-3 in Big Ten play, while the Huskers improve to 29-11 and 6-4 in conference action.

The Huskers plated five runs on nine hits vs. the Scarlet and Gray pitching. Ohio State made a lot of noise at the plate and hit the ball hard, but could only tally a run in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively, leaving 10 runners on base in the opening contest of the three-game road conference series in front 3,337 fans at Hawks Field. The game was pushed up to an earlier start time due to predicted weather Friday evening.

The Huskers plated two runs in the bottom of the third with two outs to take the 2-0 advantage vs. Ohio State starting pitcher Tanner Tully. A double by Tanner Lubach off the wall in right made it 1-0. Pat Porter tried to make a feet-first diving play in right on the following at-bat, but couldn't come up with the grab to plate a second Husker run.

The Buckeyes cut the Husker lead in half in the top of the sixth, collecting four hits vs. Nebraska starter Chance Sinclair, who kept the Scarlet and Gray off the board in the first five frames. Troy Montgomery and Connor Sabanosh both singled to begin the OSU at-bat. A RBI single up the middle by Pat Porter plated Montgomery to make it 2-1. Aaron Gretz then loaded the bases with a single to right field to end Sinclair's day on the mound. But the Huskers kept the lead when reliever Jeff Chesnut got Craig Nennig to swing on the first pitch and ground out to third base to leave them loaded.

In the seventh, Tre' Gantt reached third base with one out on the board, but Ohio State failed to capitalize. Back-to-back called strike threes by Chesnut kept it 2-1. The Huskers regained a two-run lead in the bottom half when Nebraska's ninth-hitter posted a lead-off home run vs. Tully.

Bucks take Game 2 2-1

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Travis Lakins was in the zone on Saturday. The Buckeye sophomore right-hander pitched a 10-inning, two-hit complete-game performance to guide the Ohio State baseball team to a 2-1 victory at No. 24 Nebraska Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field. With the victory, the Buckeyes snap a six-game losing streak vs. the Huskers and improve to 25-10 overall and 8-3 in Big Ten play, while Nebraska falls to 29-12 and 6-5 in conference action.

"It was a great win for us and Travis Lakins was really good today," head coach Greg Beals said. "We ran his pitch count just a little bit higher than normal but he had command of the game and was competing so well that it would of have been a fist-fight if I tried to take him out of the game. When your horse is running like that, you keep him running. He pitched very well and we got a clutch hit when we needed it."

After allowing a solo home run in the bottom of third, Lakins began to deal. He sent down the next 21 Husker batters, throwing 121 pitches overall, including 85 strikes. He improves to 2-2 in 2015 with seven strikeouts and two walks. Nebraska left-handed starter Kyle Kubat received the tough-luck loss, throwing nine innings on seven hits, two runs and five strikeouts.

"All four of my pitches were working today," Lakins said. "I was locating my changeup very well and was hitting command with my fastball. They are a great hitting-team and I knew if I competed and let my defense play behind me, that we would have a chance to win."

With the score tied 1-1, the Buckeyes claimed the go-ahead run when freshman Tre' Gantt sent a two-out single up the middle vs. closer Josh Roeder to plate pinch runner Jake Brobst. Ryan Leffel began the rally with a lead-off single vs. Kubat before

Tenth Inning Rally Lifts Buckeyes Past No. 24 Nebraska, 5-2
Buckeyes win series, 2-1, in Lincoln, Neb., this weekend

Senior co-captain Aaron Gretz

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senior co-captain Aaron Gretz collected the go-ahead RBI single as the Ohio State baseball team plated three runs in the tenth inning to defeat No. 24 Nebraska, 5-2, in the series finale at Hawks Field. With the series victory, the Buckeyes improve to 26-10 overall and 9-3 in Big Ten play, while the Huskers fall to 26-12 and 6-6 in conference action.
"It's great to get a road series victory against a good ball club," head coach Greg Beals said. "I felt good about how we played. We had to grind it out and our pitching was really good. Offensively, we put ourselves in good position but couldn't get the big hits early on. The tenth inning we really put together some quality at-bats and stayed on the baseball."

Ronnie Dawson and Nick Sergaks started the rally with back-to-back one-out singles vs. reliever Colton Howell. Gretz then singled to left field on a 1-0 pitch to give Ohio State the 3-2 lead. With two down, a Nebraska throwing error allowed two more runs to cross for the 5-2 advantage.

Senior closer Trace Dempsey tossed a season-high three innings and allowed no runs on three hits with three strikeouts to improve to 8-1. Ohio State starter Ryan Riga received a no decision in the contest, throwing seven innings and allowed six hits on two runs with four strikeouts and two walks.

"Ryan Riga pitched well through seven innings and had a couple tight situations, but was able to get out of a jam in the fifth," Beals said. "I didn't want to go home without Dempsey pitching and he got us a much-needed scoreless eighth inning."

It was another classic Ohio State-Nebraska game as the score remained close in the series finale in Lincoln. Ohio State took a 2-0 lead with a run in the first and third innings, respectively. But the Huskers tied it at 2-all with a run in the third and sixth frames.

The Buckeye bats came out swinging to begin the game and plated two runs on six hits vs. Nebraska starter Derek Burkamper. Troy Montgomery blasted his third home run of the year deep over the wall in right center to begin the OSU day at the plate. In the third inning, Nick Sergakis pushed Pat Porter around on a RBI single to left field. Burkamper only lasted 2.2 innings and was replaced by lefty Jake Meyers with two down and the bases loaded. Meyers kept it a two-run game when he induced a groundout by Nennig.

The Huskers claimed their first hit of the day in the bottom half of the third vs. Riga. They made it a 2-1 game when Jake Placzek sent a sac fly to right with runners on the corners.

Riga got into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth as Nebraska had runners on second and third and one down. A single, throwing error by Riga and sac bunt set up the Husker scoring chance.

Meyers continued to quite the OSU bats, sending down eight in a row on the mound until Tre' Gantt sent a single to left with one down in the top of the sixth. Meyers was then relieved by right-hander Jeff Chesnut. Gantt was picked off at first base and a grounder ended the frame. Meyers went 2.2 innings and allowed one hit with a strikeout.

Nebraska tied it at 2-all in the bottom of the sixth when Ben Miller hit a solo home run deep over the wall in right. Riga left a runner on second base with his fourth strikeout of the day.

In the top of the seventh, Montgomery lined a one-out double to left center, but Chesnut got a pop-up and groundout to end the OSU chance. Riga stranded a runner on in the bottom of the seventh when L Grant Davis made a nice diving play at second for the final out.

Howell relieved Chesnut to begin the eighth. A one-out double by Sergakis was wasted as Ohio State could not put the go-ahead run on the board. Chestnut threw 1.2 innings and limited the Scarlet and gray to one hit with a strikeout.

Trace Dempsey relieved Riga in the eighth inning. A one-out double and fielding error put runners on the corners with two down, but Dempsey struck out pinch hitter Christian Cox to keep it knotted at two. Davis led off the ninth with a lead-off single, but a strikeout and 4-6-3 double play ended the potential rally.

Great series win, the pitching has been real good this yr. One thing about this team is they never quit playing hard. The defense is irritating at times and they need Troy Kuhn back soon. But the offense is getting the job done and these kids play for each other.

Whoahoho. Thats awesome. Kids really have some balls this year. Definitely agree on the bad defense but the pitching has been great.

Ironically they're just like the Reds getting a lot of people on base and then cant score em. That's frustrating but they keep getting the W's. Need to get some tv coverage this week so we can watch.
