Ohio State took care of one member of the Big Ten’s elite on Wednesday, but on Saturday, the Buckeyes set sights on one of the conference’s dark horse surprises this season.

Northwestern (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) has yet to earn a spot in the AP Top 25, but it’s beginning to receive consideration after knocking off then-No. 4 Michigan State by double digits on Sunday. The Wildcats play host to No. 23 Ohio State (7-1, 1-1 Big Ten), which is fresh off its best win of the season against No. 11 Rutgers, an upset that required a 16-point comeback.

What To Watch: Buckeyes face tough test at surging Northwestern

Two teams that have built some momentum early in the Big Ten season will collide on Saturday as No. 23 Ohio State visits Northwestern. The game will tip at 2 p.m. Eastern and will be televised by Fox Sports 1.

Ohio State (7-1, 1-1) has won back-to-back games this past week over UCLA (77-70 in Cleveland) and No. 11 Rutgers at home (80-68).

The Buckeyes rallied from a 16-point second-half deficit to take the win over Rutgers on Wednesday. Three OSU players achieved career highs in that game as Duane Washington had 22 points, E.J. Liddell scored 21 and Kyle Young had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Northwestern is 5-1 and overall and sits at 2-0 in Big Ten play for the first time since 2005-06. The Wildcats stunned then-No. 4 Michigan State at home last Sunday (79-65) and then went to Indiana and won there on Wednesday (74-67).

Against Michigan State, Northwestern led 43-30 at halftime and coasted to the win. Sophomore guard Boo Buie led the way with 30 points and four assists as he hit 9 of 15 shots from the floor (5 of 6 on threes) and 7 of 8 at the foul line. Pete Nance, an Ohio native and son of former NBA star Larry Nance, added 15 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Ty Berry had 12 points.

The Wildcats then went into Assembly Hall and stunned the host Hoosiers. Sophomore guard Chase Audige led the way with 17 points. Center Ryan Young and forward Miller Kopp each had 13 points, while Buie scored 11.

Northwestern’s lone loss of the season came at home to Pittsburgh on Dec. 9 (71-70).

Boo Bui, Audige and Nance have been a tear the last couple weeks.

I didn’t expect Northwestern to be this good but welcome to the Big Ten. This one will be another toss up, especially the day after Christmas. Never know what you’ll get and no one should freak out if the Bucks struggle after traveling.

GETTING ON THE GLASS
To beat the Wildcats on the road, Ohio State has to win on the offensive glass.

Northwestern, not a major threat for second-chance points, is 286th nationally with an offensive-rebounding rate of 21.9 percent that declines to 16.7 percent when zeroing in on just the games with Michigan State and Indiana. In that pair of conference games, the Spartans and Hoosiers comparatively had a 29 percent offensive-rebounding rate for themselves.

This is a game where Kyle Young's contributions on the glass will be huge, and he just happens to be coming off a game in which he snagged five offensive rebounds. Liddell could be similarly impactful down low versus Ryan Young and Nance.

Prediction: Ohio State 77, Northwestern 70

  • HO-HO-HO-HOOPS
    • The Buckeyes travelled to Evanston late Friday evening, arriving about 8 p.m. This looks to be the first Christmas Day travel or game in 33 years, or since the Buckeyes competed at the University of New Mexico’s Lobo Classic Dec. 26-27 in 1987. The Buckeyes defeated Long Beach State on Dec. 26 and then lost to New Mexico on the 27th.

Now that we're in 'League' every win will count. tOSU needs to be at the top of their game to go against the Mildcats (who seem to have sharpened their claws). Gonna need a higher percentage of shots to fall, (and maybe a bit more timely as well), and Liddell, Young, Zed, Sueling, and whomever need to pound the glass a bit harder. Maybe rely on the guards to defend against the quick outlook pass instead of running back on D when a shot goes up? Basketball is more of an equalizing sport, where don't need 22 studs (football) to win games, only 3-5 to make a huge difference. By the way, kudos who scheduled this game, as it's a welcome sight to have on the day after Christmas. Go Bucks! tOSU 75 - Northwestern 66.
