IN THE LOOP

Sean Jones hadn’t ever experienced quite as long of a layoff from basketball before. It’s been “a struggle” logistically to get the work he wants in, he said, considering how many of his friends at Gahanna Lincoln haven’t wanted to work out as much due to the coronavirus. Yet, he managed to stay on a somewhat consistent schedule, saying he “had to make it happen.”

So when he got back onto the court this weekend in Lorain, he had a few things he wanted to showcase.

“I just want to show I've improved as a leader and improved in the eye test,” Jones told Eleven Warriors. “Stuff coaches notice first about you. I've always been able to get to the cup and shoot, so just working on stuff to make me set apart from other good players.”

The eye test, as Jones calls it, is especially important. Last year at this time, he was 5-foot-8 and 155 pounds. Now, he says, he’s up to 5-foot-10.5 and 170 pounds.

“As you can see, I'm not really getting bodied at all,” Jones said. “People just bouncing off of me. So, now I can guard anybody on the court, for real. I have no problem guarding the post for a few seconds. They're not going to move me that much. Then I got way stronger. Way more physical.”

Jones, an unranked 2022 point guard, already holds more than a dozen scholarship offers, many of which he earned in the aftermath of a standout sophomore season. He’s a known name among mid-major programs, and his skillset has him trending toward more major conference teams. Mississippi State, Xavier, Wichita State and VCU have already offered him, and several national programs – including Ohio State – have kept in close contact with him.

He said he gets the most calls from Ohio State, Xavier and VCU and the most text messages from Purdue, Virginia and Iowa.

The thing that would help Jones' chances at an OSU offer the most would be a growth spurt, haha.

He is a really good player but not only is he 5'10, he has pretty average length for his height. There's a reason that for as good as a high school PG he is, he's not ranked in the composite T150 for 2022.

Despite the fact that he will be going up against bigger and more athletic players, I still think he can be a good offensive player in college because of his floor game, craftiness, and quicks. Defense, however, is where the bigger concern is going to be for a lot of programs. He'd fit in best defensively with a team that plays a lot of traditional man with minimal screen-switching and/or maybe some 1-3-1 zone with the top 1's main role being ball pressure on the primary ballhandler.

Holtmann and Johnson's bread 'n butter, though, is the gap man D. Recovery, close-outs, and help D in this system is going to be a really tough ask for a 5'10 guy with no extra length. When we do mix in the occasional zone, which is pretty rarely, it's usually a 2-3 that plays the passing lanes up top--where, again, you need a modicum of length to be effective.

Jones is quick enough and good enough that he very well might still get that offer, and I somewhat expect him to eventually, but I think the limitations of his measurables are giving him a bit of an uphill battle when it comes to what the OSU coaches are looking at for defensive purposes.

With 7-8 open ships, I wonder if the Chris H. might renew interest in Jones now. Xavier was the presumptive leader months ago.

The recent roster changes, replacing Musa and I. Diallo with one-year-only stopgaps in Wheeler and Brunk, might now put Ohio guards like Sean Jones, Sincere Harris, and Sonny Johnson ( still pledged to State Penn though currently ) back into play as at least possibles for getting an offer. Seems pretty doubtful the staff wud look at out of state guards though; at this point in time.

The Marquette men's basketball team has the first member of its 2022 recruiting class.

Sean Jones, a 6-foot point guard from Gahanna Lincoln High School in Ohio, announced his commitment to the Golden Eagles on Friday.

Jones picked MU over Xavier and Pittsburgh. He was offered a scholarship by the Golden Eagles in May and made an official visit to campus in late June.

New MU coach Shaka Smart and his assistants quickly pieced together a roster for next season with nine newcomers, including five freshmen. But Jones is the first player fully recruited by the staff since arriving at MU.
