2026 tOSU Defense Discussion

Maybe unpopular opinion but Walt can't coach zone and neither could coombs. We're constantly standing guarding space not men with 2 or 3 people standing flat footed around the ball.

There's little amount of spot drop zones played anymore. Most every is a vision or match concept.

Players late to their overlap or not understanding route distros to match is most often the problem and why things look this way.

A few things stand out here:

- Grady needs a lot more than 8 snaps.
- Beau dropped to 5 snaps.
- Russaw had 33.

I'd like to see 12 Russaw, 20 Grady, 11 WIlder next week.

If the LBs are going to make mistakes, and all of them are, I'd rather it be off-set with splash plays.

Alliegro and Pettijohn can change the game for you.

Pierce is not reliable enough to keep Pettijohn on the bench as much as he does. Live with the mistakes that Riley has, and weigh them against the game changing plays. A defense that has to account for Alliegro and Pettijohn might actually sweat a little in pass protection, particularly if Grady and WIlder are in front of them. If they need to lean on Russaw more on early downs, so be it, but those 4 on 3rd and long would change the complexion of the d.

Seeing zero snaps for Calhoun is something, and the kind of thing the social media trolls say Day won't do.

There's just no way around the colossal loss of Timmons. Yes the safeties need to play better, but they don't have 6 quality DBs. Virtually no one does in the NIL era.

USC won that game because OSU didn't recruit or bring an OL. Their secondary got worked a lot harder than OSU's, but they had to cover a lot shorter time.

The bolded text...us following recruiting all knew OL misses would likely rear its ugly head, particularly when what we got in the Portal was borderline wasted scholarships after misses in the Portal as well. I thought this year actually wouldn't be the year that caught up to us so bad with some of the guys we had returning with Moore, Montgomery and Siereveld. But it takes 5 and a spare (or two). Case study is Miami - they cleaned up on OL in the Portal and it's no miracle they are doing so well.
