2025 tOSU Defense Discussion

With KMac gone, I'm wondering how the rest of the Dline takes shape. Most of what Coach Pat did revolved around him.

Are we no longer an odd & Penny front base? If so, I'd love to see Kennatta Jackson kick into a 3-4i tech on passing downs. Take advantage of his good, not great, first step along with his strength & wingspan.

I've been thinking about this a lot. KMac was an animal production wise but he truly was the anchor schematically.

I like the talent they've brought in on the edge and the interior. Intrigued to see how the defense changes with a very different set of personnel.

The defensive identity revolved around him & Downs.

Now it's on Patricia to determine who is our best player up front & how do we build around him. Looking at relative skill set v strength, with Houston, Will 2.0 & KJ, likely back to more even fronts.

If you would have told me we'd give up 30 points total on defense in the last 2 games and lose both games I would not have believed you
Yeah kind of unreal. But the offense just wasn't clicking and running an offense at a snail's pace exacerbated the issue whenever a mistake was made. Poor OL play, injuries and subpar play from Sayin all contributed to that. The defense more than did its job and really would have looked even better imo with above average play from the offense.

Grading Ohio State's 2025 Defense Position-By-Position

The Matt Patricia experiment proved to be a smashing success for Ohio State in 2025. However, as important as schematics are, the most important element to high-quality football is high-quality players. The Buckeyes had high-quality players on their 2025 defense.

Kayden McDonald, Arvell Reese, Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs have a great chance to give the Silver Bullets a first-round 2026 NFL draft pick at every level of the defense. More All-Big Ten performers like Caden Curry and Davison Igbinosun supported them.

Ohio State finished the season with the No. 1 scoring and total defense in college football. The Buckeyes’ defense fueled a key victory over Texas to open the season and stifled almost every attack Michigan offered in The Game. Even as the offense sputtered in the Big Ten Championship Game against Indiana, the Silver Bullets battled time and again to keep a win within sight.

Miami wore down Ohio State’s front in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals and salted away a win with its running game, but that’s one of the very few blemishes on the résumé of an elite 2025 Buckeye defense. Spoiler: There are lots of As on this report card.

Defensive Line - Grade: A-

Linebackers - Grade: A
