2024 tOSU Special Teams Discussion

Apparently Ohio State has stuck out so far in trying to get a place kicker out of the transfer portal for 2025:

Ohio State's kicking woes continue as Ryan Day strikes out in the transfer portal

Ohio State’s kicker Jayden Fielding has struggled with consistency, but head coach Ryan Day has failed to secure a solution. Despite targeting transfer portal kickers like Stephen Rusnak, Lucas Carneiro, and Jesús Gómez, Ohio State missed out, leaving fans frustrated with the ongoing kicking issues.

Ohio State is still looking for a kicker for the 2025 season through the transfer portal. The Buckeyes missed out on several top transfer kickers, including:
  • Jesús Gómez
From Eastern Michigan, Gómez made 46 of 58 field goal attempts in three seasons. However, he committed to Arizona State.
  • Stephen Rusnak
From Charlotte, Rusnak was perfect in 2024, going 11 for 11 on field goals. He committed to Cincinnati.
  • Lucas Carneiro
From Western Kentucky, Carneiro went 18 for 19 on field goals. He committed to Ole Miss.
Ohio State's kicking needs are a priority after Jayden Fielding missed two field goals inside of 40 yards against Michigan. The Buckeyes may be able to find a kicker before the portal closes for the spring, but they may need to wait until then if they don't find a suitable candidate

Add this to the list of shit that’s just hard to wrap your head around.
Our kickers don't get a lot of chances. Also, I would guess that the kicking world is a narrow one with a handful of great kicking coaches that kids know about and want to play for. OSU probably needs to buy one of those guys and let him recruit and/or develop great kickers.

The Ohio State football team had plenty of unsung heroes in its Cotton Bowl win

The Ohio State football team has a few guys who deserve more credit for their performances in the Cotton Bowl.

Kickers

Texas has a feared return game, but placekicker Jayden Fielding and punter Joe McGuire completely nullified it. Fielding consistently put his kickoffs into the end zone and also executed a perfect pooch kick that forced a fair catch at the end of the first half.

After Silas Bolden returned McGuire’s first punt for 16 yards, the Ohio State punter used good placement and height on his kicks to limit Bolden to just one more return for zero yards. McGuire averaged 42 yards per punt and put two inside the 20-yard line. Shutting down the Texas return game meant the Longhorns’ offense continually had to play with a long field.
