2024 College Football Polls

ScriptOhio

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Here's the first "way too early" 2024 Poll (and obviously a lot could change between now and the start of the 2024 season):

2024 Way-Too-Early college football Top 25

1. Georgia Bulldogs

2. Texas Longhorns

3. Oregon Ducks

4. Alabama Crimson Tide

5. Ohio State Buckeyes

2024 outlook: Ryan Day has done solid work as Ohio State's coach since taking over for Urban Meyer in 2019. The Buckeyes are 53-8 the past five seasons, winning two Big Ten titles and reaching the CFP three times. But after a third consecutive defeat to rival Michigan, followed by a listless 14-3 loss to Missouri in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, the pressure is building. McCord transferred to Syracuse, and Day went into the portal to land former Kansas State starting quarterback Howard, who threw for 48 touchdowns and 5,786 yards over four seasons with the Wildcats. Noland, from Fairburn, Georgia, was the No. 2 pocket passer in the 2024 ESPN 300. Improving the offensive line is also a priority. Ohio State's schedule in 2024 includes home games against Iowa and Michigan and road contests at Oregon and Penn State.

6. Michigan Wolverines

7. Ole Miss Rebels

8. Missouri Tigers

9. Arizona Wildcats

10. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

11. Washington Huskies

12. Penn State Nittany Lions

13. Utah Utes

14. LSU Tigers

15. Oklahoma Sooners

16. Florida State Seminoles

17. Tennessee Volunteers

18. Oklahoma State Cowboys

19. Clemson Tigers

20. NC State Wolfpack

21. Kansas State Wildcats

22. Louisville Cardinals

23. Kansas Jayhawks

24. SMU Mustangs

25. Iowa Hawkeyes

FIRST ROUND PLAYOFF GAMES (ON-CAMPUS)

Projected matchup: No. 12 Liberty at No. 5 Texas
Projected matchup: No. 11 USF (AAC champion) at No. 6 Oregon
Projected matchup: No. 10 LSU at No. 7 Notre Dame
Projected matchup: No. 9 Ole Miss at No. 8 Michigan

PLAYOFF QUARTERFINALS

Projected matchup: No. 4 Kansas State vs. No. 5 Texas
Projected matchup: No. 3 Florida State vs. No. 6 Oregon
Projected matchup: No. 2 Georgia vs. No. 10 LSU

Projected matchup: No. 1 Ohio State vs. No. 8 Michigan

This would be super unfortunate if top-seeded and Big Ten champion Ohio State faced the Wolverines in its first playoff game. That would make the regular-season meeting relatively meaningless and this could potentially be the third time these two titans face off next season. The selection committee will do everything in their power within the bracket to avoid this, but it would undoubtedly get near record-setting views at the Granddaddy of Them All in Pasadena.

1. Kansas State? Aren't they losing their quarterback?
2. I count 3 Big Ten teams, assuming Oregon is joining the Big Ten next year. (I may be off by a year.) Can't the committee split the playoff better than to have Ohio State and M*ch*gan possibly matching up in the 2nd round? If you move M*ch*gan to #7, the only potential all-Big Ten matchup is if #6 Oregon and #7 M*ch*gan both get to Final Four. And then the next potential all-Big Ten matchup is in the Finals.
3. I count 4 SEC teams. Same thing with them - they can split them up better to avoid all-SEC matchups. They have Georgia and LSU in the 2nd round. Maybe it's just me, but I think that conference matches should be avoided - make the teams win some games before they can get the all-conference matches.
4. I still think that the committee is going to do what they can to prevent the bigger southern teams from playing in the north. LSU at Notre Dame in December? I really don't think that'll happen. Would you look at that? LSU somehow just dropped to #12 - they now have to go play at Texas, and Liberty can go play at Notre Dame.

College football rankings: Programs with most consecutive seasons in AP Top 25

These programs stood the test of time.

1. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

12042573.jpg

Number of consecutive seasons ranked: 56 (1968-2023)

It should come as no surprise that the winning program of all-time in college football has also been the most recognized by AP voters. From Woody Hayes to Earle Bruce, John Cooper to Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer to Ryan Day, all of Ohio State's coaches during this stretch are big-time winners. It's been a decade since the Buckeyes' last national championship however and when you win as much as this program, that's what your judged on based on elite expectations every season. Ryan Day certainly has the roster to win the first expanded College Football Playoff in 2024, but he's going to have to snap a personal losing skid and beat Michigan on the way there.

UGA is basically only there on previous merit. They lose a lot and their offense doesn't have any proven receivers...
