2024-2025 Ohio State Men's Basketball

Key was interesting/ironic.. Generally you see someone morph his body like he did as a major positive... but in hindsight, that addl bulk was the arrow in his quiver that permitted him to pose his will and effectiveness... slimmed down, he needed to have a much higher degree of skill that was missing...

Buckeyes to tip off Diebler's first full season as coach vs. Texas in Las Vegas

It is believed this game could be part of the College Basketball Hall of Fame Series, which is a group of early season neutral site games. The OSU women's basketball team participated in this specific event by playing USC in Las Vegas this past November.

Well now we have Micah Parrish committed to be on this team. I just watched SDSU-Bama game from 2023, focusing on Parrish. It strikes me that he is the Scottie Middleton replacement. He does bring a similar height, length and build. He's a role player who will play off the ball, shoot the 3, rebound and defend. Very similar players to be honest.

It's looking to me that the SF spot will be the obvious #1 position battle for the Buckeyes in 2024-25, as Mahaffey, Parrish and White will all have a shot at minutes there. Adding Parrish (a super Senior) also keeps that SG spot wide open for the 2025 recruiting class, in hopes that they can attract a 5-star possibly. In terms of scoring ability, I think the reality is they're more replacing Roddy Gayle with Meechie Johnson. Now they just need a replacement for Battle's scoring & rebounding to round out the roster.

Outgoing transfers
Freshman Scotty Middleton (6-7) to Seton Hall
Sophomores Roddy Gayle Jr. (6-4) to scUM
Sophomore Bowen Hardman (6-3) to Akron
Sophomore Felix Okpara (6-11) to Tennessee
Senior Zed Key (6-8) to Dayton

Incoming transfers:
Seniors (2): G Meechie Johnson (6-2), G Micah Parrish (6-6)
Sophomores (2): C Aaron Bradshaw (7-1), F Sean Stewart (6-9)
1 more available scholarship: ?

I'll say with the potential (i.e. 5 star, McDonald's AA) of Bradshaw and Stewart, Ohio State is winning the battle of the transfer portal. They should be a definite upgrade over Okpara and Key.

We can now go big, and potentially be really good at it, or small work Mahaffey at Center abs be able to run like hell. I'm very excited for next season!

Forgot to mention Parks needs to shoot 200 3s per day and become a real stretch 4.

Grading the Ohio State basketball team's offseason

The Ohio State basketball team has done a lot this offseason. What kind of grade do they deserve from their offseason moves?

The Ohio State basketball program has had a very eventful last three months. They fired Chris Holtmann and made Jake Diebler the interim head coach. After almost making the NCAA Tournament with a big run in March, they gave Diebler the full-time gig. Then, they added a bunch of players from the transfer portal.

Ohio State remade its program with the vision of the Diebler era. About half the roster is filled with new players and that might be a good thing based on what we saw over the past couple of years. Diebler also surrounded himself with some great assistant coaches.

Let's start with the players he brought in. Meechie Johnson is back after two years at South Carolina. Aaron Bradshaw comes in as the new starting center and is a former five-star recruit. Sean Stewart comes in to possibly back him up and should get at least 15-20 minutes a game.

Micah Parrish will likely be the starter at small forward and brings defensive versatility to the Ohio State basketball team's lineup. There is also still another player that the Buckeyes could bring in, perhaps a guard. They have done a good job of identifying weaknesses and fixing them.

Diebler's coaching staff also was put together well. Diebler surrounded himself with coaches who have a wealth of experience and can help him with any sort of new situation he gets stuck in. That's extremely valuable for a first-time head coach to have.

Ohio State basketball offseason grade: A

I could see Diebs always going after the best players possible and occasionally winning some. I can also see him focusing the Buckeye recruiting on Ohio and Guard/Wing recruits while pulling all the bugs he likes from the transfer portal. But if both in the portal this year and this freshmen are going to be a key component to the depth out front.
