2022-2023 College Basketball General Discussion

Obviously in the case of UNC, losing a top-tier starter was the difference between a Final Four team and an average team. UConn did come out of nowhere - they basically had three players of note return from the 2022 team (and Hawkins made a humongous jump performance-wise from his frosh year), added two solid freshmen for the front court, and hit the transfer portal hard by adding four seasoned, skilled and speedy guards.

UNC wasn't that good last year. They got hot at the right time, but they were outside the top 25 most of the season.

Well, let's break it down.

UVA had just been upset by #16 seed UMBC the year before, was ranked top-5 all year but losing twice to Zion-led Duke (along with Gonzaga and others having strong seasons) kept UVA from getting to #1.

Baylor was ranked top-3 the whole season & preseason #1 in the coaches poll. Some key games were canceled, and Gonzaga was undefeated the entire season until the championship game, so of course Baylor wasn't gonna be #1 when they had lost a couple games.

Kansas was preseason #3 & an early loss partly kept them from getting to #1, but they were in the top-10 all season. Their strong schedule worked against them rankings-wise.

UConn came out of nowhere. This was a perfect storm type of season for them. They had a solid but unspectacular team in 2022 & had a lot of new guys that took time to become a championship team. UConn eventually caught lightning in a bottle - the fusion of all the new players took them to February to gel, but once they got it, they were lights out.
