Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France, later told news outlet Ouest-France that the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), which organizes the race, was filing a complaint against the spectator, who was not publicly identified. The outlet further reported that she fled the scene after the accident.

What does 'allez opi-omi' mean? The sign is a combination of two languages, French and German. "Allez" means "go" in French, according to Google Translate, while "opi" and "omi" are German terms for "grandpa" and "grandma," according to Dict.cc. So the sign would translate to "Go grandpa-grandma."

Off to a flying start as an ignorant fan caused a major crash by displaying a cardboard sign that extended into the Peloton.

https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2021/06/26/tour-de-france-stage-1-crash-results/

Anxious to see her taken to the guillotine prior to tomorrows start.

And that was not the only major crash.

I was wondering if they’d hit that idiot with criminal charges. Holding a sign about 2 feet into the road as an 8-wide peloton comes through, and not even looking at the riders as they approach. That was reminiscent of, but much more egregious, than the fan that had a bag hook Lance Armstrong’s handlebars in 2003.

They are still looking for her.

She could have stayed put and pleaded stupidity. Since she fled I hope they nail her good.

Tour de France drops lawsuit against fan who caused peloton crash

"We are withdrawing our complaint," Tour director Christian Prudhomme said. "This story has been blown out of proportion, but we wish to remind everyone of the safety rules on the race.

"If you come to the Tour, you hold your kid, you hold your pet and don't cross the road carelessly. And above all, you respect the riders -- they're the ones worthy of live TV."

French news outlet RTL reported on Wednesday that the spectator could have been in line for a €1,500 (roughly $1,781) fine after she was accused of involuntarily causing injury and putting the life of others at risk.

This was a hit and run.

The least they should do is tie her by the ankle and let Cavendish drag her through a sprint.

Merckx is right though.

I am surprised that the announcers aren't emphasizing that point more. Merckx was a complete rider with 5 yellows and wins in all types of stages.

Cav - and I love the guy - is a one trick pony who can only win a specific type of stage if delivered up in specific conditions. He is almost 2 and a half hours behind the current leaders and is in constant danger of being DQ'd for time on mountain stages. As anything other than a sprinter he does not merit comparison to Merckx on any level. Cav has worn the yellow jersey for exactly one stage and did not finish the tour that year. And if not for the injury to Caleb Ewan, Cav might not be close to 34.

All that said - his finish today was nothing short of magnificent. And I will be watching every remaining sprint stage to see if he can add to his total.

Yes, all this. But Cav’s a wanker.
