Vaughn Broadnax
In the I-Formation age, All-conference and All-American teams would feature two tailbacks and no fullbacks, even though every team had one of each. As a result, players like Vaughn would finish their career with no post-season honors. So in lieu of a resume, I offer the following:

Press Play

Of course the announcer (sounds like Al Michaels) says, "What a play by Schlichter". It was Vaughn that made that play. For decades afterwards it was known as "The Block"

DID YOU SEE THAT!?! The referee went right up to that Michigan player and patted him on the back and then consoled him. No wonder it took a miraculous 4th quarter for the Bucks to win that day. Penn State lent Michigan some of their referees for that game and the fix was on. You can see it, right there on the screen.

I know it is a bit late, but Ray gets lost in his Brother Archie's shadow.....which is a shame, as he was a heck of a player in his own right. Pictured above is him returning an interception....big surprise he's out ahead of those wanged helmets......

Ray Griffin

  • 1977 All-American.
  • 1977 All-Big Ten.
  • 2012 Inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Chris Spielman

The record book has discrepancies in it regarding solo tackles and total tackles. Without an exhaustive analysis, the source of the discrepancy was chosen using Occam's Razor: If one assumes that the Solo Tackle tables showing 142 for Cousineau in 1978 is the error and that the other tables showing 101 solo tackles for Cousineau in 1978 are correct, then no other changes have to be made. Any other resolution of the discrepancy would involve multiple errors. Because of this, the above shows Spielman as the record holder for solo tackles in a season.

Captain
Scottie Graham

His name is spelled "Scotty" and "Scottie" in the record book, depending on what section you're in, but the papers all spelled it with the "ie" back in the day. Another Buckeye fullback who would have won his share of post-season honors if fullbacks had been considered for such. We think of Tressel as a conservative coach, but in some ways he had nothing on Cooper. Coop could be counted on to turtle up on 3rd and long. He even spoke openly about it to the press. "Just run a draw and punt... that's all you can do..." That draw frequently went to the fullback. On more than one occasion (once on 3rd and 19 with me in C deck), Scottie bailed him out, gaining a first down on a play that wasn't even supposed to.
