While I agree with your general point based on the previous failures of Rod and Hoke, when speaking of Harbaugh specifically, I feel like finding someone who is not on the autism spectrum would at least have a shot when it comes to the absolute most important aspect of coaching college football—recruiting and maintaining solid assistant coaches (which is also heavily related to recruiting).

I agree. However, something has happened to him since 2016. Now, was it the administration putting the clamps on him after his costly outbursts in the Game that year? Or is it something health related, like CTE? If it's the first, that's bad optics. I never thought Harbrau was going to make them anything close to what they expected, but the guy has been at least partially checked out for the last 4 seasons. I never expected him to faceplant like he has.

Bottom line, there are way too many obstacles up there to make the job as appealing as they think/hope it is.

Even a Haffley type, looking for his shot and seemingly very capable, is going to look at the talent difference, the trajectory of the two programs and then weigh his odds of catching OSU sometime in the next 3-5 years.

You basically have to take the program to a level it's never been before just to get even with OSU. Let's say then, you can finally play The Game talent even. You still have to win that just to finally break through to a CCG/CFP appearance. Remember, you have 3-5 years. Tops. AND you are starting out in a 3 year recruiting hole...minimum.

If I am in that weight class of potential HC's, I think I can find softer landing spots than in the same division (let alone conference) with OSU, Bama or Clemson right now.

I think you forgot having to change the culture as punch list item for their next HC. What you itemized is absolutely daunting on its own, but changing the trajectory of that culture — recent and long established patterns — is not to be trivialized.

Changing the culture would be a huge admission that the whole Michigan Man thing has been a myth and a fraud for decades. I don't know if their fragile psyches can afford to go that far. I mean, it's all they have left at this point ... #winningest ... Leaders and Best ... winged helmets ... 1903 national championship....
