Suspect accused of football game threat enters guilty plea
July 1, 2020
A man who used Facebook to threaten a shooting at Ohio State University and vowed to hurt players on the football team and then-head coach Urban Meyer pleaded guilty Wednesday, authorities said.

An indictment unsealed late last year in federal court in Columbus accused Daniel Rippy of making the “electronic communication” threat from California during the game between Ohio State and the University of Michigan in 2018. The game was played in Columbus that year, and Ohio State won 62-39.

Rippy threatened a shooting at the school, saying in a Facebook message to the university, “I’m seriously going to hurt the students and all of the players from the football team,” according to a statement of facts filed Wednesday with the plea agreement.

In separate messages, Rippy also threatened “to injure or kill specific players, their family members and the head coach,” the document said.

Rippy previously entered a not guilty plea before Judge Algenon Marbley, who ordered him to remain in detention.

“Graphic threats of violence against anyone, but especially threats during high-profile events, are taken seriously and will be prosecuted,” said David DeVillers, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio.

Rippy faces five years in prison and a $250,000 fine at sentencing, which has not been scheduled.

Rippy “understands and accepts” the terms of the plea agreement, his federal public defender, Soumyajit Dutta, said in a signed statement as part of Wednesday’s plea agreement.

Rippy was arrested Dec. 28 in Livermore, California, released on bond, but then failed to report to the court’s Pretrial Services division as required. Rippy also didn’t report to a halfway house as required, court documents said.

He was rearrested in January and ordered sent to Ohio.

“INSTALLING” HATE. Ohio State's made an entire brand out of hating Michigan, and it seems they've finally learned they've got some catching up to do.

“That’s something that we’ve talked about,” Paye said. “Some of the team leaders on the defense – just enforcing that hate a lot more. Every time I turn on that game, I feel like at times – we hate them, but I feel like we have to enforce – we have to install it like freshmen coming in, we have to install it. ‘We hate those guys.’ There can’t (be) no, ‘Oh, my boy goes to that school so I’m –’ No – hate off of that. So just enforcing that to go into their brain. Watching game tape every single day on them. Making sure that we know all of their plays. Making sure we watch past games. Just making sure we’re (prepared).

“After every Saturday when we’re done with our game, I’m turning on a TV to watch Ohio State to make sure to see what they’re doing every single Saturday.”

That's fine and good, but here's the problem – like the scoreboard every November, you're already behind. Ohio State's young players don't need that hate "installed" as freshmen, they've been dunking on your ass since before they got to campus.

But hey, if the goal is to just make the game a little more competitive than the past two years, I'm all for it. Just don't set those hopes too high.

they still don't get it and I hope they never will...we as fans can hate, hate, hate, hate, hate until we can't hate anymore (none of us will ever get to that point, btw...)...but its about respect and WORKING every day to beat your rival. its about out working, out recruiting, out preparing and refusing to lose. nowhere in that statement was the word hate. you hate and you get Hoke's brawl response and another L hung on your skunk ass. hate all you like. just realize when Day drops 70 on your ass this year it wasn't because Ohio State players hated you more...they are just better than you AND out worked you to get ready for the game.

It's the Fourth of July, I'm up early, watching a replay of 2013's version of The Game, played up there. How do I feel about everything to do with their program? I think Marcus Hall summed up my feelings as he was walking off the field following his ejection. With both barrels, Fuck 'em all!!

Never lose to those pricks, ever! EVER!!

Number 28 in your program, number 1 in our hearts.

SKULL SESSION: JOEY GALLOWAY'S MASSIVE FIREWORKS DISPLAY, OHIO STATE'S ELITE-YET-SIMPLE DEFENSE, AND A POTENTIAL HOME-AND-HOME WITH MICHIGAN

FYI, FWIW.
I'm generally a skeptic when it comes to "insider info" of pretty much any kind, but I'm also a human football-enjoyer who can't help but fancy a good rumor every now and again.

And SI Michigan writer Michael Spath has the goods this time.

Based off everything I've heard, I'll summarize what I expect for 2020:

• I expect Michigan to play football this fall.

• I expect that U-M will play fewer than the 12 games on its schedule and that the trip to Washington and the Arkansas State game will be either canceled outright or replaced by Mid-American Conference opponents.

• I expect Michigan to play at least one home-and-home and potentially two or more with other Big Ten teams, most likely Michigan State, Indiana and Ohio State. I expect Notre Dame to be a very real possibility as a fill-in game because of the location and access via buses.

• I expect that if Michigan holds in-person classes student-athletes will be required to attend them just like normal students, however, I do believe that there will be specific student-athlete dorms on campus, with all the fall sports teams (including upperclassmen) to live in the dorms.

• I expect at least one Big Ten program not to play football this fall and as many as four or five. I think there is a chance for a four-team Big Ten championship bout to be played in December with the teams staying put in one city/hotel all two weeks.

• I expect the other fall sports, field hockey, golf, soccer and cross country to play but have entirely regional schedules with no flights whatsoever. I'm not sure about volleyball.

• I don't expect fans to be in attendance at any sporting event that is not football.

I feel like I have to express that I truly have no idea who this Michael Spath fellow is or if his information is legit,

but you can go ahead and consider me intrigued as hell about a potential home-and-home with Michigan.

It would be pretty weird and unconventional and it would feel wrong in many ways, but that's all kinda par for the course in 2020, isn't it? If things are going to get weird this fall, I'm totally down with things getting "kick Michigan's ass multiple times in one season" weird.

That sucks and fuck you 2020 and all that, but......essentially this means foreign players potentially wouldn't be able to play this year. If you were a program that, for some reason, felt the need to get the best players from Germany...this might put a ding in that fool proof strategy.

I think it's better to just bomb Ann Arbor than maybe miss a few murdering Boche bastards in an immigration sweep.

It's the only way to be sure

I heard a rumor that their fallback hiding spot if a bombing were to happen is State College, PA. To be totally sure, might as well get them both.

You can never be too sure.

As an aside, it's ironic how many similarities there would be between planning a bombing mission on a cave full of Tali's in Afghanistan and Cultists in State College PA. The major calculus involved is cost of ordinance to just turn over a few rocks unless you are 100% sure there is a significant enemy presence. Almost zero chance of collateral damage though (maybe a few deer). Which is nice.

So I'd make it a coordinated mission, get the CIA to to utilize some assets (code name Tug Speedwell) to organize a meeting of the cultists (a statue dedication perhaps) to ensure we aren't launching millions of dollars of bombs into the middle of nowhere. Once you are sure you've got a significant presence then it's hand of God time.
