Maybe Sermon and/or Teague will hit a groove but it’s unfortunate to not that sure-fire confidence on 3rd and 1 that you had with Dobbins; guys just don’t break many tackles or make guys miss and those situations look like more toss ups than locks. I know Day has the balls to just say “fuck it I’ll just throw idc” but still.
might sound whiney when Teague still hit century though
While third and short was a problem against Nebraska, the Bucks did much better yesterday.
Third downs, separated by drive, and results:
Q1
3-and-01 - Sermon run for 3, first down (eventual TD)
Q2
3-and-01 - pass to Wilson for 20, first down
3-&Gl-03 - pass to Wilson incomplete (missed FG)
3-and-17 - Fields run for 6 (punt)
3-and-02 - pass to Wilson, PI called, first down
3-and-03 - Fields run for 4, first down
3-&Gl-10 - pass to Ruckert, TD
3-and-05 - Sermon for 4 (followed by delay, kneel-down, PSU last-second BS FG)
Q3
3-and-04 - pass to Wilson for 5, first down
3-and-01 - Teague run for 4, first down (eventual TD)
3-and-01 - Teague run for 31, first down
3-and-02 - Teague run for 3, first down
3-and-08 - pass to Wilson for 4 (kicked FG)
Q4
3-and-08 - pass to Wilson for 26, first down
3-and-05 - Teague run for 4, went on 4th down
.....4-and-1, pass to Olave for 17, first down
3-&Gl-02 - Fields run for 1, went on 4th down
.....4-&Gl-1, pass to Ruckert for TD
3-and-08 - pass to Wilson for 12, first down
3-and-09 - Fields sacked (punt)
3-&Gl-10 - Teague run for 5 (missed FG)
Summary:
3rd and 3-or-fewer: 7-of-9, and 1 of 2 misses was converted on 4th-and-1, the other miss was a pass and 3-&-Goal from the 3
3rd and 4-thru-9: 3-of-7, and 1 was converted on 4th-and-1
3rd and 10+: 1-of-3 (Ruckert TD on 3rd-and-10)
Overall: 11 of 19 (57.9%, a good number)
So third down was generally an acceptable level of performance, but the problems were in the red zone.
6 Red Zone Possessions:
7 pts - TD
0 pts - Missed FG
7 pts - TD
3 pts - FG
7 pts - TD
0 pts - Missed FG
Red zone ‘success’ is typically measured by a scoring or TD percentage, but I prefer to just take the average points per possession. Five-and-a-half points per red zone possession is the minimum a successful team should score.
The Buckeyes only scored 4 points per possession in this game (24/6). Two more good field goals would have made it 5.0 points per possession, which is better but still not good enough. To be successful on 6 RZ possessions, a team needs either 5 TDS, or 4 TDS and 2 field goals, which would be 35 points (5.83 per) or 34 points (5.67 per).
I’m sure the coaches are studying the plays in the red zone in order to raise their RZ-PPP.
