The solution is simple. Generate a devastating pass rush.

There are no more Bosa's or Chase Youngs on the roster. There is talent but not the world beating type of talent we've been used to. So, you can't just line up every man on man and expect to dominate the opponent. We're very short handed in quality experience in the backfield so consistently leaving them on islands and in man coverage is assinine, especially when you aren't getting home enough with the base defense. For 2 to 3 seconds those guys can cover and do their jobs. Any longer than that and you end up giving people like Penix 500 yards of offense.

Find a way. Find a way to generate the pass rush we've been getting from those generational talents. Blitz, stunt, disguise coverages and assignments, mix in enough zone to throw off timing and reads. DO SOMETHING! Most people aren't expecting us to replace those NFL studs that we've lost but the staff has to find a way to get it done with what is there. I guarantee there is adequate talent to win the remaining games but only if they are put in better positions to excel. Alabama and Clemson will eat the secondary apart the way it is now. Find a way to get better.

One of our posters, who would likely know better than most, brought up the ego of our DC's possibly being a problem. If Ryan Day allows that type of thing to hinder this program then he isnt who we thought he was. I don't think thats going to be the case.

Hard for us outsiders to know the difference between "ego" and necessity keeping them in base defense so much. There were several busts, maybe that was when they tried to mix things up? These guys are young, inexperienced and only so far along in their development. Maybe sitting in a base defense and letting them play instead of think is what the coaches feel gives them the best chance for success right now?

Oh I get we do what we're best at but in cases when that is not working, why would we continue to try and do the same thing regardless of the talent or personnel? Thats completely defeatest to do nothing. We ran a zone blitz late in the game and Indiana looked like they were on an alien planet, Togiai batted down the pass. Werner on the blitz worked brilliantly to ice their second to last drive. There are plays out there that will work and even if they don't the look given to opponents is worth the effort. Show the diversity early and get them questioning what they see. Fake the blitz or man coverage with movement. We dont seem to ever do any of that. This is another reason Wade back in the slot is a good idea because he is an outstanding blitzer of the edge and let's face it, he's struggling on the outside. Might as well add at least one more strength back to the defense if we're struggling either way, no?

It still comes back to trusting the coaches to know which is the lesser of the two evils imo. The chance of a total bust when you do change it up or the odds that your athlete can beat their athlete straight up even though it's likely highly predictable play design and therefore facing "man beater" routes type of thing. I don't think any of us really know what the right answer is except that they can hopefully get more game reps and broaden the defensive playbook as a result.

I'm 100% certain that the best answer to any passing attack is a great pass rush with the front four. That's the most disappointing thing to me personally. I knew the secondary would have its issues. I, in no way, shape or form envisioned this complete lack of pressure from the DE's. If people are going to call out the young DB's and Coombs they better be saving some keystrokes for LJSR and the not so young stable of DE's.

100% agree. I know they have ideas, I think they are afraid the current crop of DB's will make them look like "hold my beer" kind of ideas.
Not much to lose really...

I don't know about you guys but I expect the next two weeks we clean things up due to who we play. However I think this wont be the last time a lot of buckeye fans are pulling out their hair.

I agree with the DEs arguably being the most disappointing though I will add we have too much talent to be struggling this badly.

I did not expect 2019 level success but then again I didnt expect 2018 either which is what we are bordering on.

We're not really looking like 2018 either. We look damn good for a half then 2018 for a half. 2018 as far as a remember was an all damn game thing not just halves of games things.

2018 went through stretches too sort of like this one... this years squad isnt as bad as them but it's getting there if we are being honest with ourselves. Even that years squad didnt give up nearly 500 yards to any one particular team.

2018 and 2020 should have been and should be a top 15 defense. The players are there with maybe the exception of Hooker who I am not sure what to make of.
