2020 Team Discussion Thread

On Monday afternoon Michigan State’s current week one opponent Northwestern announced they would be shutting down football workouts due to a positive COVID test. MSU’s football team is currently nearing the end of a 14-day quarantine resulting from a small outbreak amongst the team. That quarantine is scheduled to run through August 4.

Just sayin': It will be interesting to see what the BIG's "contingency" schedule plan is when one team is (or has a significant number of players) under quarantine.

Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward is joined by former Ohio State stars Anthony Schlegel, Justin Zwick and Doug Worthington for a fun, casual conversation about the upcoming training camp, which is expected to start Friday for the Buckeyes. The panel breaks down which Buckeyes need training camp the most and who can stand out in the next month before the season starts.

They also talk about the players of the PAC-12, who have a list of demands for their conference, and what it means for the state of college football moving forward.

“My level of comfort in our safety is really high,” Myers said. “I think there’s nothing more that our coaches and trainers and our staff can do to keep us safe. I can’t say enough about what they’re doing. And I would say that my level of concern for safety is small.

“I personally am confident that we’re gonna have a season as well, and I really wanted to say this: I think that with restaurants are open, bars are open, all these other places are open and people have the freedom to do those things they want to do, which really are minuscule probably in the importance of their lives … if people our age or any age can do those type of things, then I strongly feel that if I want to, I should have the choice to play a college football season. And I also feel like it’s a safer environment even being around my teammates and being in the facility and staying where it’s clean and safe. I think that’s a safer environment than being somewhere else or going to restaurants and stuff like that.”

Myers’ sentiments were mostly echoed by the six other Ohio State captains who spoke with the media on Tuesday, though that doesn’t mean they are without concerns.

As a result, Ohio State will be back on the practice field tomorrow and practicing at full speed for the first time in five months.

Ohio State football players have been back on campus since June, when voluntary workouts resumed at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, and participating in workouts ever since with the exception of a one-week pause in July. For the past two weeks, the Buckeyes have been able to participate in up to 20 hours per week of team activities including six hours per week of walkthrough practices, but they haven't been able to practice with contact since their lone week of spring practice in the first week of March.

Ohio State goes into camp with a roster of 120 players, with 85 players on scholarship. The roster includes 16 players who are participating in their first-ever practices as Buckeyes on Thursday: graduate transfer running back Trey Sermon, 11 scholarship freshmen who were not early enrollees and four new walk-ons – Alec Taylor (a former Ohio State baseball player), Cameron Kittle, Marvin Davies and Patrick Gurd (whose father is former Ohio State linebacker Andy Gurd).

Ohio State is practicing Thursday for the first time in five full months, as the Buckeyes had just one week of spring practice before it was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thursday's practice will be the Buckeyes' first of 24 practices in preseason camp.

Anybady taken number "0"? Would be surprised if a big name player doesn't select it, since NCAA allows it now.

SKULL SESSION: OHIO STATE IS AN EXTREMELY STRONG FAVORITE TO WIN THE BIG TEN, JALEN ROSE IS WRONG ON TELEVISION, AND THE BUCKEYES HAVE A FAVORABLE STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

VEGAS HAS SPOKEN. For those interested, you can now bet your hard-earned dollars on the Buckeyes being better than every other team in the Big Ten – provided that you're willing to stake $2.7 to win every $1.

I wanted to think this was -270 was *insane*, but then I reconsidered, because my homer ass would take that bet every single time.

At that line, your implied probability is around 73 percent. And folks, let's be real – there's a higher than 73 percent chance you see Ohio State holding that trophy at the end of the year, and everybody should know that.

Because if not the Buckeyes, then who? The team that just lost its best player yesterday? The team Ohio State beat by double digits twice last year that's worse this year? The Leaders and the Best who haven't come within three scores of the Buckeyes in two years?

I'd probably take this bet up to -400. The only way Ohio State doesn't win the conference this year is if nobody wins the conference.
